What do you do with all the kits you've built?
Posted by billy2cold on Saturday, February 19, 2011 11:12 AM

I have aircraft and armor kits mostly 1/48 scale, and I'm running out of shelves to put them on. Should I store them away? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If there is no more room for shelvesor display cabinets, then you can store them and rotate them on display, you can give them away to friends or their kids, you can maybe display them at work if you have an office,if your skills have improved, then you can toss the old ones your not happy with.

Hang them from the walls like Fermis suggested or the Ceiling.  Just look around you and I'm sure you'll find bare spots that can be used more effectively.  I have the same problem as the display case that I bought several years ago is now reaching critical mass and I have to start thinking of alternatives.  Boo Hoo

If you think they are built decent enough, check out your local VFW Posts. They sometimes like to have models on display. You could donate them for permanent display. Hobby shops (if you have one around you) sometimes like to display models. Check around.     If they are not built, either sell, trade, or donate to hospitals or rehab centers.

When my two display cases filled up, I started storing them in large plastic containers which can be stacked in the back room.

That problem has caused me to re-assess my preferences in scales.  I used to like 1:32 scale aircraft and 1:350 or larger ships.  But they fill display cases so fast, and I don't want to buy that many more cases.  I have decided to shift to 1:72 aircraft and 1:700 ships.  I also used to do larger scale cars, but will restrict myself in future to only the 1:24/25 cars.

I do have some larger scale great lakes ships, scratchbuilt, in larger scale, but my wife, also from great lakes area, lets me display those in family room.

Easy. Do what we all did when we were 12 and blow 'em up! Then salvage the remains for dioramas...

Since all the dioramas I build are about the U.S. Marine Crops I donate them to my Marine Corps League

Most of my completed kits are stored in padded boxes in one end of a walk-in closet.  I don't have much display space in the house (subject to ongoing delicate negotiations with my wife), so I tend to rotate what I have out on display.

Since we've converted our daughter's old bedroom into a den, I'd like to add a wall unit that could incorporate some more model display space.

This is the real reason fermis lives in Hamburg Michigan... Detroit had no more room for he and his kits! Wink

LOL!! as I was reading through this I thought the same thing.  I hate to think of how many of my models as a kid I blew up, shot with BB gun or lit on fire and threw off our two story balcony.  I suppose that might explain a few things about me. Embarrassed
