As I've been working on some military models with my son, my 10 year old daughter has been interested in getting involved but she naturally tends towards animal and nature subjects. Are there good sources for paintable figures with enough detail to provide her a challenge?
Thanks in advance for any help!
The only ones I am familiar with are prehistoric animals line dinosaurs and others. I bought the Mammoth in the series. I think they may also have had a saber tooth tiger. They have been reissued and are currently in the hobby shops.

Von,
Don is right. Do a Google search for both resin and vinyl prehistoric kits and you will find tons of amazingly detailed kits out there. They're out there. They're just "underground" and not a part of the mainstream hobby niche. The kits can run the gammut from just a few dollars up to a couple hundred dollars depending on the size and complexity.
Otherwise, the only other thing I can think of would be the occasional German Sheppard and Kurdish goats that you can find in the Squadron catalog. They're typically 1/35th scale so they will be on the tiny side since they are, after all, small critters.
I hope this, in some way, helps.

I could be wrong, but I BELIEVE Heller put out some kits of insects... I think tehre was a ladybug in there.
Also, if yuo want to do painting, try garden/craft stores. they usually carry cheap statuettes of birds, small animals, etc.

Definitiely try Michael's or AC Moore, they definitely carry plastic animals, which, though already painted, can be repainted.. Also try Hobbytown and HobbyLobby for makers like PaPo, who make larger-scale animals, as well as figures..
The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.
Atlantis models, http://www.atlantis-models.com/ has a bison, black bears and a white stallion that may interest you, the kits are about 21$ canadian
Great ideas. I was in Hobby Lobby today and they were having a sale on painted wildlife figures. I picked up a 6" owl for $7. A coat or two of primer and it will be ready for her to try. Thank you everyone for your help!
More here and a bunch of sets from Mantis
