FSM MAY/2011 Editorial

Matt Usher hit the nail on its proverbial head. Getting back to the workbench (even after a minor leave of abscence) will have an effect on your abilities. I'm definitely feeling it after breaking delicate parts on two kits and feeling overwhelmed when looking at an Eduoard photo-etch set. I think I should do something straight out of the box as a sort of "spring training".  Matt even mentioned the guitar and now I'm wondering if he has a hidden webcam somewhere in my house. Big Smile Thanks for another great editorial Matt; one that can speak directly  to "Joe Modeler".

Even some particular tasks require getting up to speed, even if you have been doing other modeling tasks.  One such is ship rigging, especially tying ratlines.  If I haven't been doing it for a few months, the first half-dozen ratlines takes an hour or so- once I get up to speed I can wack out a couple dozen per hour, though I frequently limit myself to a half hour at a spell.

You can get rusty at airbrushing, carving and a number of other tasks.  Being aware of that, you can allow extra time and lower your expectations for the first few sessions of that task.

Haven't actually seen the article yet, but I'm sort of trying it right now. I got bogged down on detailing & correcting Revell's P-38, as well as a first-time scratchbuild project. Working on two intense (for me anyway!) projects + a bunch of stuff at work & home, stalled out on both. I picked up a little Airfix kit, building it right out of the 1975-vintage box & am into the paint department. Just had to prove to myself that I am still capable of running something out quickly!
