Researching Vintage Models?
Posted by Crazy Horse Lady on Thursday, April 7, 2011 9:27 PM

I hope this is the right spot to put this.

I have a friend who just dropped off about 10 vintage models of various makes and themes. Aside from Googling everything (which I've started) I was wondering if there are any good sites out there to begin researching these. I think many are original releases but in my brief search thus far, I see where a lot of the originals were picked up by other makers, repackaged or tweaked then re-released.

Some appear to be still in production but I'm uncertain if they are in the same form as the originals.

Some of this stuff is absolutely intriguing - I couldn't really jump into looking them up but I hope to dig into it soon.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone had some good places to start looking. Some of the models include Monogram BSG Viper, MPC Star Wars X-Wing, Revell Tranquility Base Apollo 11 Lunar Model, some Tamiya WWII models, Bandai WWII models and Italaerei WWII models. Most are 70's - 80's or so.

TIA!

You can start here to determine how old the kits may be as well as aprox. prices but please note prices are on the high side and meant for well heeled or very desperate buyers.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I did run across that site in my quick searches and see exactly what you mean. That's one of the reasons I was wondering because they did seem a bit on the high side - but hey, what do I know? lol! But at least I can get a date on the kits. Thanks again!

oldmodelkits.com and Ebay would give you a good ball park figure.

Once you do that and if you really want to sell them they will have to priced at least 20% lower.

No matter what a price guide says a collectable is only worth what a buyer is willing to give you.

I remember back in the early 90's guys would tell me they had so and so's rookie card that is worth $1000!

I would tell them I'd congratulate them when they actually found someone to give them anywhere near $1000.

Thanks mitsdude! I haven't been able to dig any further yet - but I hope to soon.

I think my friend really does want to sell the models - but he's not expecting to hit the lottery either because there is one major problem. The boxes are absolutely THRASHED and I kept them on the porch for awhile because I was looking for unwanted critters and vermin. UGH! Talk about epic storage fail.

But, the plastic with all of the parts is intact and they have all of the instructions and decals.

Although, I wonder if the decals are any good. Can't they go bad after awhile, even when stored properly?

So, that would bring the price down even more...I'm thinking really low here.

I hear what you're saying about only worth what someone will pay - it happens with the model horses too. You can have something that's actually pretty rare but it seems like you can't give it away with a dollar tied to its tail. Then you see these massive bidding wars, going for a couple hundred, over a horse that's as common as dirt but people think it's a variation because it has mildew on it that makes it look like it's a different color. Bang Head

As soon as I get a better clue as to what I'm dealing with, and depending on what my friend wants to do, it's likely this will be a Craigslist thing and put them together in small lots rather than going with Fee-bay. Wink If these things were in top notch condition, it would be a different story.

We're out in the boondocks over here so I really doubt they will do anything at a garage sale. There is one model shop in the area - they sell old, discontinued models but I really don't think they will touch these with a 10 foot pole.

I think these are specialized enough that only a serious modeler would be remotely interested in them. If they were more common WWII tanks or airplanes, we'd probably be better off. But how many casual model builders want a Bandai WWII German Panzertruppe Schwimmwagen?

After this coming weekend, I want to start digging and see what I can find. Thanks so much for the help on this! I really appreciate it!!!

If anyone has any ideas...please feel free to toss 'em my direction.

Cheers!
