VERY LARGE SHIPMODELS
Posted by tankerbuilder on Friday, April 22, 2011 5:18 PM

Hi , well I am back from the creative endeavors in association with BaD SHIPMODELS in ARIZONA . I was wont to surmise as I worked on the brass rails and ladders on a 1/96 scale model PROTOTYPE that I believe I now know the answer to the question  many wives ask their modeling hubbies when they get into large (read R.C. or just very big static ships) Is not really a simple one . Do you put it in the living room on the mantel ? What if you don,t have a mantel ? On top of the bookcase ? what if yours go all the way to the ceiling . Well , I do the answer I gave my missus . When we travel it goes in the front basement (we had a fifthwheel R.V.) . When we are at home they go in protected cases in the GARAGE .  (OUR GARAGE HAD AIR AND HEAT) Now  , I have to ask , how do you explain a ten foot long ship model to a wife who doesen,t really understand why you build these things ? The simplest is to plainly explain your creative need of an outlet, It takes some convincing , Get her to help you do the fine details and the final detailing of the model , explaining how proud you will be to tell the guys whos wives wont hear it , how yours helped you build hthe model !!  That my friend has worked for two wives . One is gone now , but she helped me build some of my large early work that is of intrinsic value today ,  to someone out there . The second just watched  , but , was entirely fascinated by the hobby , had never seen it done before and watched as I built the model explaining in laymans terms what  I  was doing and why . She also got involved  , at least in the R.C. side . So there you have it .      tankerbuilder

There are worse hobbies & pass times to get involved with.

Modeling is a release of creative & artistic expression that challenges patience, hand-eye coordination, planning chronological & logical steps for assembly. Once complete you have a scale miniature to be proud to display (In your case float) Last but not least its a 3D version of the builders historical interest.

Few women are in the hobby. Here on the forum there is about 1% +/-. For her (your significant other) to relate compare the hobby to knitting or scrap-booking. The latter fills all criteria listed above as a hobby.

For more ammunition tell her I know people who can't go out on the town one night for less than 200$. In contrast my most expensive kit cost 180$ After completion probably will cost less that 1$ / hour of enjoyment.

Hey Tanker Builder,

What if you decided you wanted to ride quarter horses, and build a barn as well?

If you ever come up to Toronto Canada, theres is a fabulous display of 10 foot long ships at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Good man, keep those big builds going, I'm looking forward to seeing the build!
