Silver Sharpie?
Posted by Dirk Jackwagon on Friday, May 13, 2011 4:47 PM

Recently, someone wrote a letter to the magazine about how he checked seams for flaws before painting.  I've tried without success to find the issue with this letter in it.  One of my recent magazines is MIA.  It could be in the missing one.  Anyway, he ran some sort of silver marker over the seams to find flaws.  Can someone tell me if he was talking about a paint marker or an ink-type Sharpie marker?  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dirk!  Yes, it's an ink-type Sharpie.  I've used one for the past year or so, it does help quite a bit.

Hobby Lobby has some paint-ink pens in the department with calligraphy supplies.

I believe they were $2.00 each. Comes in a variety of colors, including sliver. Different widths too.

They have the Testors versions in the models section for about double the price.

Thanks for your help, Watchmann.  Could you tell me what size tip you're using, the brand and where you got it?  All I have been able to find so far around here (Kansas City area) is an ultra-fine tip at Hobby Lobby.  It seems to me a wider tip would be faster and less work.  Model on, Dude!

Regards, Dirk

Hi Dirk!

It's just the regular sized Sharpie.  Here's a link.  I usually use the edge of the tip to get wider coverage.  I find it works pretty good, but not as good as a primer coat.  It does keep me from having to spray more than one coat of primer to find the defects.

I got mine at either Office Despot Depot or Staples.

Take care,
