US Navy Cruisers/Destroyers
Posted by nhl3 on Sunday, May 15, 2011 10:51 PM

i have been out of modeling for quite a while now and i am looking for a specific class of warship. I have searched the internet and have been trying to find a model kit for a 60's cruiser/destroyer. My dad served on one in NAM and i would like to build one and give it the hull numbers his ship had. If successful in finding a kit in time it will be a fathers day gift from my son and myself. please help if you can.

The choices of Vietnam era ships, let alone  cruisers and destroyers are very slim in plastic kits. Most are old and out of production. Is there a particular class of ship you are looking for? Revell recently re issued USS Chicago and USS Long Beach, two Vietnam era guided missile cruisers. USS Chicago was used as "Red Crown", a radar guidance role for air combat, in Vietnam.

I served on the Uss Jouett.  I have not been able to find any model of a Belknap cruiser.  I have found custom kits, but they are rather pricey.  Let me know if you find anything as I would be interested to.  I do remember we had a ship model which was rather large.  I have no idea who inherited it.  I do remember an OS working on upgrading it, but this was back around 1988 or so.  Good luck.

I'd suggest asking this on the model ship forum. I have seen lots of people's similar questions answered there.  The real experts in what is available seem to hang out there.
