My wife is good about it too. My dad has a basement full of his finished planes hanging from the ceiling (about 143 at last count) and my wife has commented in the past, "Man, you're mom is really good about that...I couldn't handle that much stuff hanging from the ceiling".

She knows it really helps me relax and re-focus after a bad day at work, so she's pretty encouraging about it.

I guess I'm pretty lucky - my wife puts up with me and my very solitary obsession. Sometimes comes into my work room and watches over my shoulder - we can have a chat, a laugh, but she can't really get involved. I share my triumphs with her, and she enjoys that, just as she shows me her triuumphs with her crafts, but neither of us can fully appreciate the significance.
As about 90% of my modelling is contract work that helps to pay bills (builds, resin molding, conversions) she leaves me alone regarding the 75 or so unbuilt.
Could be worse - the manager at my local hobby shop has about 1000 (yes one thousand) unbuilt kits - but he's single.Big Smile [:D]

Cheers, LeeTree

So then, how do you account to the wife for the money that was spent?

Regarding Step #3 of badbird's procedure: If you take an empty box slightly larger than the box of the kit you're planning to, uh, "transport," you don't need to bin the packaging of the new kit. Wink [;)]

ok guys, here is my well overworked 'sneak the kit in the house' trick
ive used it so many times and the fiance is non the wiser!!!
1. get your tool box and an empty model box, make sure the wife sees you with your booty as you leave.
2.the excuse is that you show off youre work at the hobby shop and pick up a few tips.
3.purchase the desired product and willingly 'bin' the packaging, transfer the contents of the new kit into the empty kit.
3.on leaving the hobby shop, dont forget to 'get the story straight' about what you did there. i.e "oh yes mrs. jones, youre hubby was here last week to show of his model building". Women have a good memory and and a sense that would put pulse dopplar to shame.
4.when you get home youre ****** is covered, you have the new kit and all should be well. if you dont have enough room in the box, make sure youre tool box is empty too, for extra room, hehe!

now, i am not liable for any divorces and will assume no resposibilty for arguments or the likes of.

good luck modellers.

Don't have a wife, but the girlfriend is quite supportive of my hobbies. Moreso than most I've run into. She's built a few herself, though only for fun and with no serious intention. She also supports and contributes to my interest in WWII pin-ups. Gotta love a gal that buys you all sortsa collectibles with scantily-clad women as the theme. She's also a great model herself! (hehe) I feel very fortunate in this respect, never run into another that supports most of my interests in such an accommodating manner.

Someone mentioned the number of kits in our collections, I usually don't get into p***ing contests but I'm afraid I have you all waxed! 3-car garages full of kits pale in comparison to an entire studio apartment full! I've never bothered to count them, just not that important to me I suppose. I guess I'll have to get a digicam and post a pic or two.

Count me lucky. My wife is the one that got me back into the hobby. In fact she's thinking about picking up some figures and having a go. I think she spends as much time looking through FSM as much as I do. And she gets excited about hitting the hobby shops.
We work together and put in some long and stressful days. Normally she'll take off and hit horse shows or dog shows and I hit the historical re-enactments or the hobby shops. I suppose now I'll have to hit the horse shows... although I think I've heard her mention a few hooby shops enroute...

My ex (no, no - the problems had NOTHING to do with the models!) was quite supportive. She was into crafts so we'd end up doing our hobbies at the same time - and the Michael's store nearby, while no modelling mecca, had just enough Revell and Monogram kits for me to secretly look forward to her craft-related shopping trips because there was usually a present for me involved!!

I used to do shows and my wife helped out. I would buy 250 kit collections at a pop. Now she tells me she misses the shows. She is well aware that the upstairs is jammed full of kits with more coming in weekly. God I love that woman!!

2500!!!!!!! thats a shop mate!

2500 is nothing - I have a three car garage that I can hardly walk into for the model kits, plus my hobby room (10'x13') has selves with reference books and the 'ready' supply of kits to build. This is not including what is on the workbench. At last count there were over 5k worth.

I'd have to say I'm very lucky with my wife as well, she is a collector her self (Dragons), so we both collect beyond our means, she only complains about the smell, so I'm building myself a studio (dawg house) out in the back yard, now I can blast the classical at 1 in the morning .Evil [}:)]

My wife is of the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" camp-- she realized that I like to do modeling to unwind after work and she figured if she wanted to talk to me more, she should just start modeling as well ;) Her first attempt kicked the crap out of my first attempt.....I had done a 109 model (which after having do many since- looks like crap to me now)-- and she took on the P-26 Peashooter. Not only was her paint-job practically flawless-- she even stretched sprue for the riggin wires and it looks excellent. She attributed her painting to the fact that women have an advantage over us with always having to paint their nails ;)

She started a P-36 Hawk and had to stop when she got pregnant-- too many fumes ;) But she is anxious to start back up on it.....

Plus-- buying her a new model gave me an excuse to get one for myself LOL

My wife just asks me to check in from time to time to make sure I haven't "died in the saddle" while woriking on a kit. My shop is in the basement, and she told me once that she always knew when I was working on something by the hum of the spray booth and compressor and the whine of my Dremel tool. Gotta love 'em. Besides, her hobby is cooking and collecting cooking gadgets and cookbooks. We jockey for storage space now. She oohs and aahs at my latest hobby accomplishment, and I get to eat hers for dinner!

Monteverdi,

Thanks for that interesting feedback. As far as the "sniffing glue" subject, You may want to check the caps on all your bottles. I suspect there may be some fumes in your workshopBig Smile [:D]. Just kidding!
