How Long does it take you ?
Posted by MLabonte on Saturday, June 4, 2011 3:13 PM

Just wondering and I'm sure I will get all kinds of answers due to size and detail and etc..... But on average how long do you think it takes you to do a model ? I'm still fairly new to modeling and sometimes I'm all game then it sit's there for a month or 2 then back at it !!!

Anyone else in the same boat as me ??? I figure for me to do a model accurate and with a busy life style as mine " work / kids / etc... " I figure it takes me atleast 6 months ! Some of these kit's /models I see on here are pain staking accurate and detailed out of the Wazoo - these thing's must of taken for ever to do unless your retired or do nothing else but model !!!

Thought's ???

Longer as I get older!

But seriously, 1 to 3 months depending on complexity, parts count, quality of fit & life getting in the way.

For my own models the answer is simple anywhere from one week to one year .I keep building like I am building for a client , then I wise up and say"hey, wait a minute here" Then I build just for me.That means sometimes Straight out of the box . It then becomes FUN again.      tankerbuilder.

Two ways to answer this question :)

I could say I can complete a new model every friggin day, assuming I don't stop. The don't stop part that's the problem isn't it.

Just finished an 88 that was mostly done about a year ago Minus the wheel sections that is.

In the last two weeks, I have polished off some lingering tasks that have been lingering since the 80s :)

But I have also polished off a few kits that have just been sitting unbuilt  in the stash as well. Did an Italeri M3A1 Scout Car in 2 days through to assembly. Now it needs to get friendly with the airbrush.

Absolutely finished, completely done, decaled the whole deal, heck that rarely happens around here.

It changes with the seasons.

What would average 1-2 weeks in winter, will take 1-2 months in summer, when work picks up again.

Currently working on #20 for the year, and probably will be into next month, at the rate I'm going.......WAY too F'n busy now! Can't wait till winter!!!

Manstein's revenge

...11.7 years, on average...

Manny,

He asked how long you take to build a model. Not how long before you even look at the ones you bought! LOL!!!

Personally, it can take me as little as a week or as much as a couple of years. (Got to give those shelf queens some loving.)

See ya

I would say on average it takes me about 3 to 6 months from start to finish. Of couse all things vary with the size, amount of "extras", etc. etc.

Enjoy the ride!

I used to average a kit every couple of months. Life's become much busier. Now it takes 6 months or more. Pulled 2 72nd scale kits out of the stash back in February, a Tomcat and a Vaark as a dual build. Both were already started. I guesstimate I'm close to half done with the project.

Way too long, months on end. It would help if I have a dedicated work area where everything could be left until the next session. Without 2-3 hours to model there is not much point at this current time to even bother.

'Weekend Madness 2010' was very therapeutic for my affliction. The Mrs. vas very understanding & let me model all weekend! Finished just under the 48 hour deadline logging 20 hours spent on a 1/44 scale 38(t)

The original parts count including PE was about a dozen. I added 28+/- for a total of 40 parts. NO AM all scratch building old school'

Some scratch building & kit parts shown below VVV

Here is the 38(t) Display base made AFTER the Weekend of Madness:

Life keeps getting in the way of my hobbies.

That said, build time can be a few days for a straight  OOTB

( waiting for the glue and paint to dry )

to years if I can't obtain the detail info i need for a particular project.

I rush too much and it shows in my builds.  Usually, a couple of weeks, but I'm getting better and taking more breaks along the way.  I'm not into super-detailing and build with only a few AM parts.

Its supposed to be fun.

6 months.  Two of those months I ignore the model, one of those months is when I fix the latest improvement when it was already done & I couldn't leave well enough alone.

Several months, due to parts count.......either provided in the kit or ones I make or convert. I obsess over the basics like filling seams and making sure the finish looks good. I try to make sure surface detail is properly represented. For me, this approach is relaxing and fun. Of course, life's other activities don't always allow  for a daily session either.

Often it takes me about 3 months per model. But during hollidays the building time can come down to two weeks.

To speed things up a bit I do multiple builds that use the same colours so I can airbrush them the same time. That way I average about 5 to 10 models a year.

I've never really kept track of the time from opening the kit to placing it on a diorama, but I do tracj actual construction hours... Generally speaking, 20-30 hours for 1/35th armor, and 12-20 hours for 1/48 single-engine aircraft, one-three hours for a 1/35-2/32 scale figure, depending on how much repositioning...

I've got some kits I started 10-12 years ago,  so if I use your parameters and count the time I let it sit, it could take twelve-fifteen years for me to finish some models... I have around 25 or 26 kits that are under constuction right now..

On top of that, all the kits I I build are for dioramas, so a kit is only part of the build... Just a sub-assembly, as it were..  Might spend 15 hours on a tank, 2 hours on each of 3-5 figures, and 40-80 hours on landscape, terrain, foliage, structures (and their interiors)... Sometimes it takes 4-8 hours to make a tree... And if there're three trees and all there little bush-buddies, well.... You get the idea...  Still, if I do my normal 8-hour day of building, I can knock it out in two weeks... But then I don't go near the bench for a month, so I avoid 8-hours a day...

Some of these kit's /models I see on here are pain staking accurate and detailed out of the Wazoo - these thing's must of taken for ever to do unless your retired or do nothing else but model !!!

I'm retired, so I can spend as much time as I want with a kit...  But even before that, it still was about the same, in hours...

And don't let that "detailed out the Wazoo" thing fool ya... Many of those "pain-staking accurate and detailed" models are done with one or two pieces that were bought after-market and painted in an hour or so, then installed...  For instance,  I used a resin cockpit for a P-39 once (it was a gift from the "Secret Santa" group build, I didn't buy it, so no "Ah-HAA!s" from any of you clowns) that was one-piece plus a control stick, and it was painted and installed in less than an hour...    The kit's cockpir woulda taken about three... But, I'm "old school" and LIKE to make my own detail parts... That way, there's not another kit exactly like it out there anywhere... It's all mine, lol...

Old-school modelers like me spend time on kits... The others just spend money...

But all-in-all, it ain't about how long it takes, its about how much enjoyment you get out of it... The faster you go, the less you get...

I'd say that I average a build in 1 to 2 months.  It depends how excited I am for the kit, how much detail is in the kit, and how complex it is.

I just finished a Hasegawa F/A-18 that I was really excited about.  That one took roughly 6 weeks.  I also have a Polar Lights USS Enterprise that I've been working on for 2.5 years!  Heck, I have an Airfix 747-200 that took me 16 years to finish.

I imagine that most guys in here are like me...I have a hard time settling.  What I mean is that if I see an error in a build I have this urge to correct it...even if I'm the only one who is going to notice it.  If the paint didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted it I'll repaint it or touch it up.  If I notice a hairline seam after priming or even after painting I'll fix it.  If the model isn't sitting perfectly level I'll bust off the landing gear and make it right.  This is especially true on an expensive kit.

Plus, I spend alot of time looking through photos of the subject on the internet so I can build it accurately.

Another good reason to build dioramas... If that happens to me, the plane gets a tarp thrown over it there, with a figure pulling it into place, lol...
