Finding that old model kit
Posted by mstazz62 on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 1:11 PM

Greetings fellow modelers! I was surfin' the net and came across a site that I failed to bookmark (DUH!) that listed all kinds of old kits I remember from my youth. Wow - what memories! Anyway I saw an old MPC kit in 1/72 scale called "Breakout From Normandy". It's a diorama of a French farm house with a couple US halftracks, jeeps and figures. it has a vacu-form base also. Oh, man, I just gotta have it! My on-line searches have proved fruitless. Can anyone help? Please?

Here's hoping -

Mark

Thanks Tim!  I did look there but no luck. Man, this is gonna make me nuts! There's got to be someone out there who's got one and is willing to part with it. When I saw the kit I thought wow, I wanna get it again and really do it up nice!

Again, thanks for the help!

Anybody else? Please?

Mark

If it's what i think it is, then it's old. i saw these large dioramas with guys, tanks, and sometimes barriers or guns. Oh, that takes me back some.

I build all of mine as well. I collect a lot of things to keep as is in original condition, such as militaria and other antiques, but model kits aren't among them.

Wow - what memories!

Hi Mark,

Not to sound too negative about your quest, but I think that when you finally get hold of the kit and crack open the box, you'll find that your memories and expectations will far exceed what you find in the kit. You will find that the vehicles and figures are (IIRC) 1960's vintage Airfix kits (in 1/76, not 1/72 scale).

But if it's what you want, go for it... Big Smile

I remember seeing that set at K-mart back in the day.

I had the Rat Patrol and Anzio sets.

They were trashed along with most of my other models when my parents moved while I was away at college.Sad

The Normandy may actually be the Anzio set.

You just have to be persistent/vigilant, and watch online auctions, like eBay, and look at any shows that you can get to.  I've seen some of the old Airfix/MPC diorama kits come up on eBay from time to time.  if you come across an old hobby shop, too, look and see if the owner has a stash, you never know what you may find.

I had the Atlantic Wall dio, with a styrene gun emplacement that sat on top of the vacuform base, and 40 WWII German infantry; the Commando Raid set, that had the Arado seaplane, as well as a dock crane in styrene, a vac base of a dockside or pier, and 40 British commandos; the Pearl Harbor set, with the Val kit, and a destroyed P-40 molded into the base; and the Guadalcanal set, with an M3 Lee kit and 40 Japanese infantry, on a jungle island base.  They were so cool!  Though, I think the figures were 1/87, as was the Lee, while the aircraft were 1/72.

Keep looking, I think you'll find them!
