Impulse buying vs ordered specifically
Posted by HisNHer Tanks on Monday, July 11, 2011 10:38 AM

Ok there is no way to include online purchases as those are defacto special orders (there is no way otherwise to order online).

And I see a lot of comments to the effect one can often get a kit for cheaper via shopping online. But recent conditions with regards to getting an item in the mail only to get bushwhacked by a curiour expecting duty or brokerage fees has left me to wonder if online is always gauranteed to be the 'cheaper' route.

Anyway, spurred on by the thread at Track 48 discussing the upcoming soon to be available Tamiya 48th scale 88 atg kit (which comes also with the Afrika Korps set of figures) and how everyone was groaning about the price tag and how retailers would be reluctant to stock it at the price it is asking, the question is, due you normally just buy kits as they appear (through blind good luck and random chance) on the shelf, or do you look through the catalogue (as I do) and have the store order it in specifically for you?

50 bucks for the Italeri made Tamiya release that includes the Afrika Korps figure set (which is like two 25 dollar kits actually) is ok with me to some extent. As it will be made with Tamiya plastic if I am correct (which I tend to prefer in a lot of cases). Even if not the case, the thing is, I special order what I want. Thus my local store doesn't really take any risks with me and my needs. I also know she moves a lot of Dragon to a few locals (whom I have not met, but she claims are there :)).

She has a fairly nicely stocked shelf in the store, but I suspect she makes most of her sales on demand. Which is likely how any rational retailer should go.

I do occasionally see some kits on sale out of country online for peanuts. But my son's last purchase (from Razor in the US) for a fancy schmancy key board (I think he's nuts :)), was already pricey at 60 bucks, but to get told at the door it was 21 bucks more thanks to brokerage fees, sure makes a difference.

I have been told these brokerage ambushes are getting more common. I can't see the worth of a 20 dollar kit that costs 30 off the shelf, being a good idea if it arrives at my door and is looking for more than 10 bucks in brokerage fees. I like a good deal, but it needs to hit my hobby table and have gotten here the same deal I saw on the computer too.

1 - I have no idea what these brokerage fees are. Must be a Canadian thing I guess?

2 - I impulse buy online all the time. In that I define an impulse buy as "something I did not intend to purchase when visiting the site". Oftentimes I'll go in search of a specific kit or detail set, a small shopping list of paints, etc. And then bam, Great Models is selling Trumpeter's P-47D-30 for 50% off. There's obviously the delay in getting it, but it's the same mechanism, IMO. Of course in this hobby I've noticed a substantial overlap between impulse buying and keeping an eye out for bargains. I've got a big ol' list of kits in my head that I want, but not at the retail or even pretty substantially discounted online prices. But when I see one of those kits on sale...like...really on sale...I pounce.

I am exactly the same way....  I get email blasts from a number of companies. Typically I will glance and close before I get carried away. BUT, when they have a substantial sale going on,,, I will look a little further. And, no doubt, I will see something that I really want. The discounted price will push me over the edge for sure.

I'm a huge impulse buyer....

Not familiar with the brokerage fees either.

I buy on impulse often, in the form of bidding and winning on kits on eBay.  I've got kits that I just happened to see, bookmark, bid on and win, and which I wasn't thinking of, before I saw them.

Same goes in a bricks-and-mortar store.  When I was looking for the Daniel's Red Baron kit, new, I went to HobbyTown for it.  My local HT just happened to have a sale going, which offered kits of lesser price, for spending $10, $20, $30, and so on (so, spend $20, you could pick up a kit for $10 or less for free).  So I got the Academy P-40B in 1/72 free.  Sure, it's not such a detailed kit, but hey-it was free!

Best regards,

Brad

The only time I buy online is when I know specifically what I am after. I don't browse websites. I don't have a really disposable income so I can't browse and purchase whatever it is that jumps out at me. All my hobby purchases online are premeditated.

However...most of my models come from the local hobby shop, whether its Michael's, AC Moore, or my mecca of model shops 40 mins away, AAA Hobbies. If I have some cash I want to blow, I go to the store and look around. This is where impulse comes in. I generally don't go to the store with something in mind, I simply let the urge hit me when I see that special kit that wants to come home with me. Kinda like going to the pet store or a shelter....."can we keep it, pleeeeeeese?" That's when I swoop in, rescue the kit and provide a warm and comfortable spot in my stash for it.

I try to hold off on new releases until the price drops or I can pick it up on ebay or one of the major online retailers for a sharp price reduction.

Canada charges duty, which is a tax on buying from other countries other than Canada. You guys just celebrated a national holiday created after your forefathers got tired of a particular noxious duty, and to make it hurt just a bit more, Canada charges your for the cost of inspecting your package. This is known as a brokerage charge. Consider it baksheesh to grease the customs office if you like. That's what is seems to be.

It depends on the carrier, and the online retailer, if you get charge one, the other or both. For instance, if I order something from Newegg or Tiger Direct I don't get charged either, as they have a Canadian presence. If I order from Great Models I do. That additional cost often makes the price of the kits more than they are worth from a Canadian merchant.

I've been buying kits from Hong Kong, which seems exempt from any additional charges, so it appears as if there is we get penalized for shopping in the States.

So long folks!

Yes,What is a brokerage fee ?

I only order from a few spots online, & generally just go the "regular mail" parcel-post route. I think if you go the courier route, they often add a brokerage fee for the "hassle" of dealing with customs... I've had a couple deliveries up to around $50 and have never been hit with any cross-border fees. (yet! Indifferent)

Wasn't this the sort of stuff NAFTA was supposed to fix?

I don't buy anything I wasn't looking for because it has a discount. Those are not savings at all. However, when I go to my LHS I might add a jar or 2 of Tamiya or MM Acryl colors to have at my disposal whenever I need them. And for the most part, I end up using them.

is it considered an impluse buy, if you weren't really looking, but while looking in the squadron catalog for something else, you notice its on sale by 40%, so you got it?  I've done that a couple times, not to mention the ads here on FSM, saying 50% of (insert brand) kits at such and such till MM/DD/YYYY.  I mean you got to take advantage of half off sales, right?

In my book, yes. That's how most of my impulse buys happen.

WHOO-boy! I see you and I use two very different Internets. I locate something, research it, and buy it. One, two, three. (I can also tortuously study something to death.) Why do you think that online purchases are any less impulsive than something seen at a LHS or a paper catalog?

Occasional factual, grammatical, or spelling variations are inherent to this thesis and should not be considered as defects, as they enhance the individuality and character of this document.

Brokerage fees, I suppose being Canadian isn't perfect by the sounds of things :)

Looking at the comments, I suppose you can get impulse fever while online as well now that I see your comments.

I buy on impulse 95% of the time, especially when I see the yellow sticker on a kit at Hobby Lobby... Picked up Tamiya's Jeep (13.00), Beaufighter (17.00), He 219 (21.00), Monogram's Phantom Mustang (16.00), Academy 's M7 Priest (21.00) & MH-60G Pave Hawk (25.00), SB2U-3 Vindicator (14.00), and Dragon's Marder II (19.00) that way...

The other 5%, planned buys, is for on-line buys for specific kits that're either commision builds or for group builds I wanna get into...

Generally, the way my impulse buys work is that I go in to get a jar of paint, some basswood/balsa or some other type of scratch-building material like Plastruct or Evergreen or the like, and *POOF*, there's a yellow sticker in the kit aisle...

Of course, I have Ebay sending me kit searches for Mongram kits every day as well... Guess you'd call them "Planned Impulse Buys"... I plan on buying a Monogram kit, but don't know which one until I see it and the price...
