Spare paint lids?
Posted by Kugai on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 8:37 PM

It might seem like an odd question, but is there anyplace to order spare lids for Testors Model Master paint bottles?

I do take precautions to wipe the bottle every time to keep paint from sealing the lid on and so on, but the lining for the lid eventually gives out, foil or plastic coming loose from the cardboard, long before the paint would otherwise be "dead."

The only option I know of is to get the set of empty bottles, but that seems a bit wasteful in both resources and money.

Not a bad question..........   Although I do not have an answer, I will be checking back to see if there is anyone else who might know

Best of luck with it Kugai

I actually just read a post somewhere (now if i can remember where) in which the writer suggested using linings from milk (not sure if they actually have one or not) and juice containers.  I'll try and track down where I found it but I'm not making any promises and I haven't actually tried it before.

Peace through superior firepower.

Pepsi products plastic bottle caps

So far, I have found the 16 oz, the 20 oz, and the 2 litre bottles all have caps that fit,,,,,some of the bottles from Wal Mart soft drinks work also, some of the other brands might look like they'll work, but, they are not quite tall enough,,,,,,when we go shopping, I take one along to match up to any drinks the SWMBO is thinking of,,,if the cap isn't the same, I have her pick a different drink

these  reach far enough down on the MM bottles to seal against that solid ring of glass just below the threads, as well as seal at the top as usual,,,,,,,,,and they don't ever glue themselves in place

Thanks, TarnShip!

I just tested one for fit on the bottle I use for cleaning off Tamiya paint from my brushes.  I'll have to save a few of those caps to try out on actual paint bottles later.  That way i'll be able to see exactly how the lid sits and check for any changes to the jar cleaning "ritual."

I've used lids from soda like that for years for colors I had to quickly mix small amounts of that would only be needed for one session.  Funny that even with them near the Testors bottles I always thought they looked too small.

just a heads up,,,the tip is somewhat brand specific,,,,,,,for example Coke caps don't work, they don't reach down to the glass ring

but, once you find one, you can find the other brands that do work as well as the Pepsi caps,,,,,,,one of the bottled water caps also works,,,,,,,I just don't remember the brand off hand

Do you brush-paint and use the lid as a paint-cup?  Removing the paint from the lid and its threads is at least as important as keeping the bottle's threads clean...

Keep a pint of MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) around to clean those caps... It'll make short work of even dried-on enamel.. It'll clean up those "dead" bottles of paint too...

Manny

I would,,,but, I got the tip a few years ago from some long forgotten online source,,,it wouldn't feel right

best I can do is pass it on whenever i see someone ask about it

also, to go with Hans' idea,,,,,,turn your stuck bottle upside down,,,,put the MEK or Lacquer thinner around the rim of the paint/jar joint,,,it will dissolve the dried on paint,,,,,it sure beats pliers and "exploding paint" splatters on the wall,,,,,pretty as they can turn out sometimes

In a way, yes.  I don't put more paint in the lid, and tap on it before opening the bottle to minimize what's left on it before opening the bottle, but I do use the paint in the lid first to minimize waste ( especially given how much the prices have gone up in the past 10 years ).  If I do need a temporary paint cup, I typically use an cap from a bottle of soda since it's going in the trash anyway ( I guess it's a kind of recycling, getting another use out of it instead of just one ) instead of buying something specifically for the job.

As far as the threads go, the way I do things rarely causes any paint to get in there.  The main times I've had problems was years ago when I ended up accidentally damaging lids that were stuck while trying to open the bottle.  After making a few adjustments to the old routine ( I didn't regularly wipe off the edge of the bottle up to that point ), I rarely have problems even with Tamiya lids, but do make sure to clean any threads that get paint on them as soon as I notice it needs to be done.

Always keep a lighter handy to soften the paint under those stubborn caps... 'Cept for the ones like Tamiya's...  You'll just start 'em on fire...
