The unsung vessels of the fleets
Posted by tankerbuilder on Sunday, July 31, 2011 12:10 PM

I do have to ask , how many of the capital ships can we build .?  Wouldn,t it be nice if TRUMPETER and maybe HASEGAWA or TAMIYA (if they kept them affordable) came up with 1/350 support and service vessels ? The idea of building a diorama for instance where two or more of the ships are scratchbuilt is a daunting task . I would like to see TRUMPETER do the SACRAMENTO in 1/350 and supply decals for the other three sisters .It would also be nice if they would come out with AKA,s and APA,s as well as ammo ships and oilers too . In one scale ! I have just about gotten burned out on scratchbuilding the missing ships in scale to tell a story . True I haven,t posted pictures because of my in-expertise on computers But anyway I am of the OLD school where you don,t toot your own horn !! That is a holdback that goes deep . I would do it if I could just build the ships OOB and add my touches to tell the story . The article in the issue this time about the LCVPs and the one LVT leaving and loading troops is a good example of what I am talking about .The troop ship had to be scratch built in that scale of course , but over 200 figures ,oh my gosh ! I usually don,t even do the figures that do come with a kit , whether it,s a patrol boat , tug boat or whatever . I have NEVER been able to make them look right . Now machinery of any type is another story . I would like to do the U.S.S. WISCONSIN in 1/350, BUT I cannot seem to duplicate the smallish deck planking on the afterdecks which are quite different and in raised detail as done by TAMIYA .The U.S.S. NEW JERSEY has a whole different after deck with a weird plank pattern as it is . I like the IOWAS now that I have been invloved with the 1/96 MODEL that went to NAUTICUS in NORFOLK. I want to do the "WHISKEY" in 1/350 though . Now how about a MIDWAY ANGLE DECK post KOREAN war  aircraft carrier in 1/350 ? If they can do the ENTERPRISE  in that scale, why not the more well known MIDWAYS ? I know it would be a large model, but , the ARIZONA in 1/200 is no piker when it comes to size either !   oh well .    tankerbuilder.

Here, here. I agree 100%. While the warships get all of the love, the aux. vessels continue to plod along performing their extremely important duties. Oilers, tenders, supply ships, harbor tugs, ocean going tugs, salvage tugs (of which I was a crew member), minesweepers, hospital ships, etc. Yeah, I know these ships aren't high up on most people's want lists, but it would be nice if a couple of the mfgs. could throw us a bone every now and then.

Don't know if you have built Trumpeter's 1:350 J O'Brian or not, but it is a great model and a proud addition to my fleet.  A big oiler would be nice.

I'd like to do a torpedo retriever or a 1/35 rigid hull inflatable boat with all the trimmings.

FWIW, this month's FSM has a review on Trumps U.S.S. Sacramento. She was the first in her class of fast combat support ships. Unfortunately for me it's in 1/700, but other will like it I guess.

I used to steer the Ranger alongside the Super Sac during UNREPs back in the 70s. She was big and fast. Sacremento was built with the engines intended for the battleship USS Kentucky.
