I am deaf and I am proud of it if you can look at my profile name.  Born that way and I have a deaf brother too... doctors think it was caused by genes from my parents.  I am cool with that...

I consider being deaf a blessing in disquise... I can't hear those whinings, baby crying in a restaurant or even in a plane since I travel often.  I talk better underwater when I go scuba diving with my wife.  How?  We use American Sign Language (ASL).

How does my deafness affect my modeling?  Not much... only drawback is watching those video clips here on FSM or Youtube and they are not captioned.

Aaron Skinner, maybe you can do something if you are reading this. Big Smile

Love live ASL.... death to AGB!

I thought I posted this the other day . Here goes again . I just found out today ,  I NOW have a chronic pain situation on top of the nervous disorder and what I call " SIR SHAKESALOT " .This however does NOT stop the building . I have already modified my building techniques to allow for it . I must say though , I had a friend in ARKANSAS .(Back when I was involved with CAMS ( now a different name using the same letters ) This friend was also LEGALLY blind .So he always rode to meetings and contests with me .That,s alright , He was one fine darn armor model builder . He got me into BANDAI,S 1/48 scale armor (boy do I miss those little jewels .) My friend worked at the MED . Ctr. there as an x-ray tech . He did ,on many occassions, find things on the film that the doctors with 20/20 completely missed . He said it was because he almost had to wear them that this happened . I admired his spunk and overall attitude of ( "Who , me disabled ? NAW !!) So there you have it . You do some darned fine work so how are you disabled ?  . A person is only unable to do as is their frame of mind . Keep on keeping on and thanks for the photos .        tankerbuilder        P.S. If your brain ain,t broke , everything else is just a small annoyance .

I am disabled but not in a way that would directly affect my modeling.  I'm missing part of my right leg, the part I lost controls my foot and had to have a tendon transplant in my foot to keep it from flopping around.  If I sit for a while without propping my foot up it will swell to 2-3 times it's normal size.  Since I can't prop my foot up while modeling, I can't sit around all day working on models.  Which is why most of my projects are short work times.

Spent the majority of my time here as a member while in a wheelchair... Last Feburary I finally got the hip surgery that allowed me to walk again after 3 1/2 years in the chair..  By mid-May I was out of the chair entirely, although I still use it as a modeling chair...  I'll be back in it after I get the other hip replaced in October, but only for a few weeks...

If anything, it allowed me MUCH more build-time, lol...

If anything, it's my eyesight that's going, but mostly just due to the fact that I'm getting older... I have to use readers now to paint any kind of deail, or work with tiny parts... I have some cataract issues, but they're not yet in my line of sight..  It's the damned "floaters" that get in my way more than anything...

… and the sexy cane. (You can’t believe be how I’d like to throw my cane off a high building …) Subtle like the “b” in “subtle”.

Any disabled/handicapped modelers out there?

Normal 0

I’ve been a bit curious to ask the following: Are there any other disabled/handicapped modelers out there? If so, I wanted to ask the following questions.

  1. What disability/handicap (Eyesight, Cancer, Amputee, Disease, etc.) do you have?
  2. How has your handicap affected, if any, your model building?
  3. Do you go to model contests and show off your work?
  4. How do others (Modelers or non-modelers) treat you and your work?
  5. What tools, techniques, tips, etc. have you learned for overcoming your handicap and continuing with your model building?

As for myself, My only handicap is my eyesight. I am nearsighted. I am legally blind in my left eye with 20/800 eyesight, and have 20/75 eyesight in my right eye. Both eyes are also in the early stages of getting cataracts. I also have a retina condition (Too complicated to explain.) in both eyes which cannot be corrected in any way.

Despite my eyesight, I have enjoyed model building since my early teens and have no desire to stop. I enjoy this hobby too much and don’t want to let my eyesight make me quit and give up what I love doing. I can’t build kits “professionally” the way other modelers do with photoetch, airbrushing, weathering, etc., but I try the best I can given what time, skills, money, resources, etc. I have. But the most important lesson in life I have learned came from my mother. She always told me “You can do anything you want to if you just put your mind to it.”.  Definitely good advice. ;)

Despite my handicap, I have built some really good models that friends and other modelers have enjoyed. Both examples below were scratchbuilt pretty much by myself and have won numerous First Place and Best of Show awards. What I lack in eyesight or other resources, I make up for with taking my time, working slowly and carefully, perseverance, and patience.
