Modeling supplies for soldier son
Posted by cyeargin on Saturday, October 1, 2011 9:25 PM

My son is currently deployed with the Georgia National Guard to Afghanistan, and would like to build some models during down time to while away the hours....we have sent him some kits, however, upon attempting to send him assembly supplies the postal service and modeling suppliers won't allow paints and glues to be shipped via airmail. I know there are military modeling clubs active in-theatre, but none are close to where he is. Any suggestions?

Send some of those prepackaged acrylic sets by Testors and super glue (CA). I used an aircraft acrylic set for my tanks, but there are gloss and car sets if those are the colors he needs.

Couple other things you might bring to his attention..  As a "Super-Scrounger" from way back, starting in the "Pickle-suit Army". there's also a few avenues of approach that he can take from "in-house"...

Every unit has a Maintenence Section that has certain colors of spray paint on-hand for touch-ups and the like.. Make friends with the TAMMs Clerk and he'll have all the OD, tan, brown, and flat black spray paint he'll ever need...  Also, the Unit Clerk and the Supply daddy can get quite a range of enamel paint markers for the company's office supplies and they're right there in the system... MEK, or Methyl Ethyl Keytone can be found in the brigade's paint shop and is "Numbah One Airplane Glue and Brush Cleaner"...

Being as he's GAARNG, they won't be near as anal about it as the RA units are...
