I have a funny idea
Posted by Tomcomposer on Sunday, October 9, 2011 6:46 AM

Hi All,

I am a composer.  I have recently started making little films to accompany my music.  I had an interesting idea for one of these little films today when I was building a model with my 7 year old...

Some of my music is quite delicate and detailed, and writing it is not unlike making models (well, for me).  I thought I'd like to write some music to accompany a film of a model in production.  So I thought I'd come here and ask if anyone is interested in collaboration!

Here are some considerations:

* There's no money involved - this is just for fun and interest.

* I'm hoping someone might be interested in filming the process of their model-making.  I would edit all the footage (to sync it with my music).  However the modeler would have to use their own camera (probably requiring a tripod) and be prepared to upload the video.

* I am appealing to someone who is interested in doing an exceptionally detailed model :)

* I have various ideas about this - if someone is interested I'd go in to further detail about my concept.

Let me know if you are interested or if you know someone who might be.  I know this is totally off the wall, but I thought I'd just put it out there :)

If you're curious, here's a link to a piece I did this year.

Wow, that is an interesting idea. I wish I had a video camera to do something like that. All I have is a Kodak 12MP EasyShare camera that also shoots 780pHD video, but it's memory will only hold about 10 minutes of video until it's full. But, at the rate that I build a model, it would take me at least 6 months, if not longer (I've got one that's been in progress now for almost 20 years......), to get enough video shoots together for a whole build. Very interesting idea, though. I'd bet Swanny would have some stuff for you.

A video that's a mixture of time-lapse, and actual video, might work?

Great idea, seriously. Forget about me, unless you have a piece four months long! I am the WSM. (world's slowest modeler).

Actually, it really doesn't matter how long it takes.  This project is fairly hypothetical and long-term minded :)

The more careful the modelling the better.  At the moment I'm working on a Lancaster; so I'd do this myself but my modelling skills are average, and my kids join in which reduces the quality somewhat :)  .

I have in mind sharply cut up and tightly edited footage, to fit with music.  If a modeler worked, say, a half-hour every day or so, then I reckon I'd need about less than a minute of footage per session.  The idea would be to capture the assembly process, and the video would be made of regular vid / stopped animation, and some fast-forward.

Anyways, just a thought.  It'll only happen if someone wants to give it a go :)
