AMAZON for models?

They've got distribution centers all over the country, but the headquarters and programmers, etc., is in Seattle. I have to pay both sales tax (10%) and shipping, so until I get Prime I'm still a "casual" user.

They are building a new distribution center close to where I live...primarily to handle the model packages coming to my house...I'm nowhere near Seattle...

also.. when you search.. it gives you other ideas.. I've found obscure movies and books this way..

AMAZON is always my first stop when looking for plastic and some supplies.  I have found good prices and kits there.  Plus we also have prime shipping so no worries with that.

Ditto.. And if you pay with PayPal, you can get your money back far easier...

BUT...kits on Amazon are often sold by merchants, not by Amazon itself. This can lead to 1) weird customer service 2) pricey and inept shipping.

You can find some great deals, though. I've purchased factory sealed Tamiya Jugs on Amazon for $30...

Several of the model retailers have a presence on Amazon. Typically this isn't where savvy modelers shop because selection is limited and prices are typically a bit higher.

 

...for example, out of Great Models, Squadron, Sprue Brothers and Amazon---only Amazon carried the Limited Issue Hasegawa Betty G4M2 a/c in 72nd scale I was looking for, and they were of only two of the four (Sprue Bros also had 'em) to still have the Bronco Sdkfz 221 w/ the 2.8cm gun in stock.  And in comparing prices it was the cheapest--in stock or not.  I hardly think those two kits are generic...

I use Amazon for lots of things but have never bought a model from them but I have bought Air Brush accesories from them before.

There are always exceptions, but those retailers I know put on Amazon many of the same products they offer in their discount or bargain sections of their store page.

Amazon is a place to attract nontraditional customers who are looking for something unique and different. Typically those who don't have access to a local hobby shop or never bothered to check one out. Amazon is great at tailoring selections based on your browsing history...which follows you to other websites that have banner advertisements placed by their retailers.

If you find a deal, go for it, just be sure it really is a deal by checking pricing (including shipping).
