From Dirk Pitt's Flip Files: Modeling Room v. 2.0

So, when we moved to Fort Collins in 2010, the house we bought was a foreclosure.  We got a great deal on it, but consequently, it was in need of quite a bit of renovation work.  Thus, for the last year and a half, we’ve been basically renovating room by room, project by project.  Finally, a month ago, we got to my favorite room:  my office and modeling room!  I had a design in mind from the get-go, geared towards the needs of the modeler.

I’ve put some pics side by side to show a before and after view, as well as a couple of additional pics.   First we painted the walls a nice rich, red ochre color.  I stole that idea from some of the pics posted in the other thread about modeling rooms (thanks, guys!).  I repainted the trim boards white and reinstalled them as well.  Both the walls and trim boards were very beat up, as this had been a college rental house before we bought it.

After the walls were done, we ripped out the nasty, cat-pee-stained carpet and replaced it with laminate hardwood flooring.  I tell you what, this stuff is SO much easier to clean!  As long as you don’t spill any paint, you can sweep it on a weekly basis.  Dust and crap is cut way down, plus it’s easier to find lost parts on the floor.

After the floor was finished, I cut squares of clean leftover carpet to slide under all the display cases so they could be moved around easily.  The carpet is placed upside down, and hence the display case slides very well on the flooring.  After that we installed a new door, white instead of that nasty ‘70’s brown, and I strategically placed power strips at all the outlets.  These are very handy for plugging in Dremels or compressors or such, and as long as you make sure not to draw more than 12 amps off the circuit, you won’t blow any breakers.  You can see them on the floor in some of the pics.

Finally, I installed brighter light bulbs in the overhead room light, installed new insulated blinds for the windows, and framed and hung the artwork.  The artwork had been rolled up in my closet since 2003 or so, so it was nice to get it on the wall.

Anyway, here’s my new and improved modeling room, version 2.0!

After.  We have yet to replace the closet doors here, as well as put a couple more pics on the wall.  Little bit different angle on this shot as well ;)

Back facing the door now.  I use the dry-erase board to make notes for project steps, as it helps me stay focused and get stuff done.  I also note songs I've liked from Pandora on there, so I can buy them later.

Start to finish, it took my wife and I about three weeks to get it done, but most of that work was on weekends.  We also had to wrangle a five-year-old and a three-year-old while we did it.  I still need to replace the light switch and all the electrical outlets.

Anyway, I'm off to build!  Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Chris,

I am very impressed.  Three partial weeks and two little ones and you have a good looking room there.

Congrats.

I'm impressed AND jealous! That's a great looking modelling room.

I can't wait to have a dedicated room for my modelling....one day.

Great work. I like the Peral Harbor newspaper and Arizone prints. Very fitting for the 70th anniversary today.

Thank you!  It ain't pretty, but it's very functional- filled with loads of modeling tools and supplies I have acquired over 50 years.  And if you spill a bottle of paint or beer on the floor, no harm done!  It just adds to the ambience.

And I think the sewer drain and iron support post in the middle of the area adds a nice decorative touch, too!
