Have you ever fallen for...
Posted by VanceCrozier on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 11:02 AM

I recently returned to a 2nd hand shop that has been selling some old kits. An "estate sale" kinda deal. The guy had literally thousands of kits, but this shop is probably down to 150 or so. I dropped in to check out what was left, knowing they were marking down from their already-marked down prices. I remember seeing a certain kit there every time I had been in before and having absolutely zero interest in it. Well I cracked the box open on it this time - Italeri's 1/72 Sukhoi Su-22 M-4 "Fitter-K" and somehow fell in love with that crazy Soviet swing-wing ground attacker.

Anybody else have a story about falling for a model they weren't expecting?

Yes, I have bought a rash of cold war Soviet armor starting with the Trumpeter BTR-60P which I bought on a whim... It looked cool. In the end It changed my current focus from German WWII to Cold War and modern subjects.

I can't see any model kit that did that to me

but

I did have a decal sheet that sent me off on a tangent, causing a bunch of kits to jump into my shopping bag

We were standing near the IsraDecal stand at the Nats in Virginia, I glanced at the table as we were talking,,,,,,and got completely engrossed in the F-21 Kfir markings,,,,,I bought the sheet, and went off on a tangent of Aggressor models for a while,,,,,,so, now my Navy collection has a bunch of Kfir, F-16, F-5 and A-4 kits that are just plain fun to build, including a "need" for another T-2 to do in the Aggressor scheme

My deal is all about deployable aircraft, so all those cool looking multicolored aircraft stand out pretty far from the norm

but, gotta tell ya,,,,,,multi colored camo is fun to mask and spray,,,,,,especially the "no two alike" patterns

almost gone

Yes- Revellogram's1/32 Hawker Hunter. I bought it on a whim because I wanted to build a big jet and had read good reviews about the kit, but never really had any interest in it beyond that. I fell in love with the kit, the build, and the aircraft. Best large scale kit I have ever built. A true gem!

Yep, the Hobbycraft Seversky P-35, never thought I'd dig an obsolete, Swedish marked fighter.

I got that kit a few years back (different boxing) off a vendor for $2!!!

To answer the ?......yes.

The same vendor that I got that kit from, had another, kinda oddball looking plane kit, marked at $15. Not familiar with the craft at all, limited funds and too many kits to choose from, I didn't give it a second thought. The following year, I saw the kit again, with a new sticker for $12, again, I passed. But, the thing kinda grew on me, and I regreted not buying it. This past year, he still had it, marked down to $9...it was the first kit I bought at the show, haggled down to $7. It was a 1/72 Toko (never heard of em) an-72.  It's gonna take some work, but eventually I'll get to it!

Different planes have "grown" on me over time but mostly its a scheme or markings that make me fall in love with an a/c I already have---that why I have over three-dozen Bf109's built up in my collection...I'm also a sucker for nose-art...

Yes, but that was at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show and her business travel just interfered too much..........

The early 109s are my favorite and , though I don't have as many, the wide variety of paint schemes makes the aircraft look unique each time. Just doesn't seem to grow old.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,a sucker for nose art? Yes, I noticed.....................

Would have to be Eduard's 1/48 Nieuport 17 profi-pack. Took me way out of my WWII comfort zone by presenting numerous modeling challenges that I never faced with monoplanes and breathed new life into the hobby for me.

I know what you mean. Over the past decade I've built all WW2 fighters, probably 60% Luftwaffe / 20% Japanese / 20% allied. over the last year or so I've added probably 12-15 (I'd have to count!) cold war jets, and now four modern Russian jets. Identity crisis!!

Well, I did think the Ryan 'Dark Shark' was one of the most fugley aircraft I've ever seen but after building the thing the look kinda grows on you. Ok she's not a Spitfire but well, **** I dunno...

I had originally purchased a Trumpeter Su-27B to go against a Tamiya F-15C in an 'adversaries' display, but I like the kit so much (due in part to the more graceful lines of the Flanker) that I've added a second B, a two-seat C and another two-seat G to the stash.

Embarrassed I've since returned to the shop & walked out with a Mig29, Flanker, Sea Flanker and Strike Flanker, all 1/72 Italeri kits.... Apparently we both have a case of Flanker-itis.
