I've done a quick test of Italeri and Vallejo paint. Please go to Italeri/Vallejo comparison in the painting and airbrushing sub forum.

The paints came in today. I'll do some tests with them tomorrow and post my thoughts.

Sometimes I'm glad I have color-vison issues, since the "exact colors and shades" in those little bottles don't look like it at all to me when I set them next to the 1/1 scale versions.....  TLAR is close enough...

I ordered the free bottles, I just picked colors I didn't have... That'll be the end of it..

I don't like acrylics anyway...  'Druther have the 1/4 oz Practa 'Namel back... Their OD was a dead-on match for the OD on my M109 when it was painted in the MERDC camo...

hey James,,,,,,I am sorry for the way this spiraled downhill

I am just so disappointed again

I have seen this "new and great" paint range deal happen since the days we had to mix our own colors with the original Floquil,,,,,each time a new paint range comes along,,,,,,,I expect to see errors or omissions corrected by the new company that jumps in

It seems like the perfect time to me,,,,,,but, it never happens, only one company has mostly done it, and their range isn't broad enough to just buy a dozen or two paints from them and paint a model with all the paints from one source (WEM did it just fine, but, there are understandably ship oriented)

so, we have to keep on buying paints labeled as Soviet Sand, to build a USN jet, and source USN Maroon from wherever we can find it,,,,,or compromise on Magenta/Magnolia,,,,,or what have you

I just think it is silly to have to buy "Ogre forehead Blue-Green" to paint Oxygen bottles in a cockpit (just a silly example that touches on the truth, haha)

maybe Italeri will one day split that 36622 Gull Gray into the two colors, 36622 Camo gray for the USAF, and 36440 Lt Gull Gray for the USN,,,,and add 34102 to their range so we could use the colors to paint the Italeri Vietnam era jets they sell

it is just the disappointment talking,,,,,and I apologize for that

"paint fairy",,,,,,man, you just love to drop bait

of course a company has to have a lot of the same colors in their paint range,,,,,,they would be useless if they didn't

Nope, still don't know what you are talking about with the two Oranges,,,,,no paint company lists 12197 on their labels, and then *actually puts that color in the bottles*, they Sell 12197, but with the wrong color in the bottles,,,,,,,,,this is the first time a new company lists both, sells both, and according to their paint swatches on their chart, has them be different actual colors

I will go with the info provided by a man in the hobby industry on another site,,,,,over some guy that doesn't know that there are 4 colors in the Camo for a SEA aircraft (2 greens, 1 tan, and 1 gray,,,,,,and the gray was definitely NOT 36622 Gull Gray, lol),,,we'll see what the paints actually look like in person,,,,,,but, as of now, this is the company that has people paint their Sea Blue Gloss aircraft,,,,,,with Blue Angel Blue, in their instructions

I didn't want any last word,,,,but, I can't resist troll bait when it is typed at me, I guess

There are two oranges in the Italeri acrylic range. Testors makes the same two oranges. The difference is one of them is currently only available as an enamel. Try checking the last 60 or so numbers versus the Testors line and tell me how many matches you get. And if you had read my previous post, I already talked about the numbers that don't match - Testors makes all of them as well. They are available only as enamels only in the 'Model MasterII' range. Not hard to believe they could be made ad acrylics too. I also don't  get the relevance of the 'missing' Vietnam color. A lot of colors aren't going to be available at all in an 80 paint range. Do you have an actual logical explanation why they are copying do many Testors numbers? Remember, those acrylic numbers have never been quoted on old Italeri kits. They didn't start until this line came out.

You seem to want to believe the paint fairy dropped this stuff out of the sky, when a more reasonable answer is obvious. We agree on two things - I won't be getting any either; don't need another paint line. And that it is not worth talking about any more. Let the market decide, and you can have the last word. Later.

it is not "getting the same thing in both bottles, too",,,,,,there is no "too" in the two MM paint lines,,,,,,,each of them has ONE International Orange,,,,,,,labeled as 12197, but, both lines have the older orange actually in the bottles

and as for your "paint numbers matching up" thing,,,,,,I looked at the first 6 in Italeri's new list,,,,,,no such numbers to match up to in the MM Acryl line

one of us is using false logic, and it was not the one that decided not to pursue the matter

just for grins, take a look at Italeri's brand spanking new line,,,,,,,look at this color,,,,,,and try to decide what is going to be in the bottle,,,,,,"36622, Gull Gray",,,,,,or maybe tell us how a "new paint line that matches up with MM, doesn't even include all 4 colors needed to paint the Italeri mold of the F-4E in Vietnam

meh, I'll just pass on this product, there are already enough paint lines that actually do let me paint models

If you have some actual evidence that Vallejo or someone else is making these, why not share it with us? I've given my reasons to doubt it....the fact they list two oranges means nothing. How do you know you're not going to get the same thing in both of Italeri's bottles too? Rather than believe Italeri has come up with a new paint line out of thin air, the fact that they and Testors are still doing business together leads to a far simpler solution to the question, along with the reuse of product numbers and colors that are available already from Testors.

Thanks for the heads up.

I just did a phone order with a very pleasant lady. We'll see how it goes.

You can believe as you wish. I am well aware that Testors parted ways with Italeri a while ago - as distributors of their kits. Italeri Model Master paint is still quoted as an option on their recent kits, like the 1/48 OH-58D. So while not being their kit importer, it hardly looks like the business relationship is over.

Also, most Italeri kits  have quoted Model Master numbers for the last 10 years...as enamels. No mention of acrylics, so why use exactly the same number when almost all of the kits out there don't have an acrylic paint option even given anyway? No one can be confused now by a kit quoting 4728AP Olive Drab when it doesn't exist at all in the past...

As far as the 'mystery' colors that don't appear to have a match go like the orange, let me assure you that Testors does in fact make all of the colors on the Italeri acrylic paint chart in the Model Master range. The thing being that some of them, like the orange and the WW2 colors are available as enamels only right now in the Testor's range. Not much of a stretch they could be made as acrylics too, if someone wanted to pay for that. International Orange FS12197 that you mentioned, for example, is Model Master enamel 2022.

Lastly, why switch from Model Master branding to 'Italeri Acrylic Paint' you might ask? Having your 'own' paint range is a lot more prestigious than just a slight relabeling of someone elses. Now that they are not the kit importer, Testor's may have less influence over that decision to get things their way. And in the end, I am sure they don't care what Italeri calls it or where they sell it, since they would have gotten paid for it regardless. By the way, on the back of the physical acrylic paint flyer that has been coming in the Italeri kits recently, the Model Master branding/logo is still displayed on some of the items shown there...

Unless and until Italeri comes out and names the manufacturer, or someone else comes forward and admits to being the manufacturer(both unlikely), I am going to think these are just rebranded Testor's products too. And hey, if the paint is good and you like it, then none of the who made it made it matters in the end. But I am thinking the same product is already available, and cheaper, in your local hobby shop right now in many cases...

James, Testors and Italeri parted ways a good while ago, now

I think the numbers that DO match up are just that way to try to be less confusing as Italeri changes their instruction sheets

Also, there are a lot of colors in the Italeri list that are not on Model Master's list

For one example, Italeri is the first company to list both International Oranges, most just label Int'l Orange as 12197, but then give you 22510 in the bottle

One head scratcher for me though,,,,Vallejo has you buy one paint for brushing, and another for airbrushing,,,,,,how Italeri paint will work for both, I don't know (it says to use for both on the website)

I plan to get the 3 free, and the 8 halfpriced in January, to play with, and see how they work

Chris2504

A little research indicates they come from Vallejo, the bottles are 20ml, which is a smidge bigger that Vallejo bottles, and for 2.17 a bottle, its a pretty good price.  The craziest thing on that page was the $13.77 retail value, which would indicate that each bottle is almost 5 dollars individually. That seems excessive, I see a 3.30 MSRP with a 2.40 asking price for 17ml Vallejo bottles on Scale Hobbyist.

I have my doubts they came from Vallejo....Italeri has rebranded Testor's Model Master for many years as their own paint. I am all but certain that these are just Model Master acrylics branded as a 'new' product by Italeri. For example, Italeri acrylic US Army Olive Drab is product code 4728AP. Testor's Model Master acrylic Olive Drab is product number 4728. A bit too much of a coincidence that there is a 100% match to Testor's for every 'Italeri' acrylic number I checked....

Italeri is giving away 3 bottles of their new acrylic paints for free, but you have to pay shipping of $6.50. Link:

Has anyone used this paint before? I wonder what to use to thin for airbrushing?
