E-Subs... Downloadable and printable?
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 5:30 PM

Just curious about these here new-fangled 'lectronic 'scriptions... Are the articles down-loadable and printable?  Interested in knowing about that first, sice I don't have, nor do I have plans to awquire, any E-book readers or smart-phones..

Issues can be downloaded for offline reading.
, But he didn't say if it was printable..

So can I download and print an article like something in pdf format if  have an E-Sub in order to read stuff at my leisure without a PC nearby"

Odds are, if you can download it, you can print it.

Hell, just do what I do - copy everything into Word and print it from there.

Hans, Just buy the magazine paper issues... Save yourself the trouble. FSM is one of the cheapest mags to purchase anyway. By the time you buy the electronic issue, ink and paper... not to mention the hassle of doing it.... you'd be happier just buying the paper mag. I've tried what you're talking about and it's a pain.

I also strongly prefer paper issues myself but I also have a smart phone and E-reader with a few mags I bought from Pocketmag on them. I like having a couple on my phone for those times I end up waiting somewhere for a long time and don't bring anything to read. They can be a challenge to read that small but it's better than nothing.

Most of the mags I buy are the British ones that cost anywhere from 10-20 dollars and issue on the news stand and in electronic from they're less than half that so that's a plus.

But for the person on the go the uses a tablet or E-reader a lot... The E-issues are the cats pajamas.

I already am a paper subscirber, of and on since the mag's first issue in 1982.  I was just curious if the E-thing was easily printable and *ahem* "legal" to do so in a pdf format...

Not much of a chance I'll give up the paper, unless FSM gets a "Hey! A New Idea, Gang!" and does something... Well,   stupid... Whistling

OMG, I didn't know you could digitally subscribe! I just got an iPad for Christmas and that has a reader program on it. I stopped subscribing this past February because I simply ran out of space to store my magazines that I'd acquired over a 5 or so year span. If I can just store it on the iPad, then that takes care of that!

Another question I have regarding digital subscriptions is how are they sent to you? Via email? If so, do they arrive as a PDF?

With Zinio they show up in your list of magazines.  The files are in ZNO format, their proprietary format so you can't use something like Acrobar Reader.

Ya can't print them either at least not from within the Zinio app.  I just purchased FingerPrint and put it on my XP box at home.  This will let me print from any of the printers connected to that box.

So if I have an iPad, they would show up on whatever the digital reader program is on that device?

I can't view through either Nook Reader or the iBooks reader so I'm thinking you'll need the Zinio app.  It's free!  As soon as I signed up for the digital subscription FineScale showed up in my Zinio library.

Hmm.. I'm thinkin',  "stay with paper subs"...

At first I though it interesting, since if i could print out what I wanted and trash the rest (ads, hobby shop directiory, reviews, Showcase, and all that junk), just keeping the real, actual articles in a binder it might be worth it, but now, no...

True, I have WAY too many binders of FSM and other rags, but I just can't bear to part with 'em... Especially if I can't just use any E-device I happen to have either...  Ain't buying some new gadget just for that...

I have a love-hate relationship with ebooks.

I've been reading e-books since the 80's  and have grown to despise them.

However, they are portable, compact, and searchable but I still prefer the hardcopy. Great to take to work, on a trip, on vacation, etc. You can put a ton of them on a memory card the size of your pinkie nail. View them on your phone, tablet, e-reader, or PC.

I guess I'm just old school. I love the paper.

Hi Hans,

If you are using Zinio, you can both download and print the magazine. You can print a single page, a page range, or the entire book if you'd like. Nook and Kindle are different beasts, and while it may be possible to print using them, it probably won't look right.

I believe there was also a question about how long subscribers will have access to their digital magazines. Our plan is to maintain our partnership with Zinio, so you will continue to have access to your magazines via the Zinio library indefinitely.

Also remember, you can download your magazines to your computer or tablet, and keep the copies on your own machine if you wish.

Best,

TK
