Nice experience in Michaels
Posted by gunner_chris on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 9:22 PM

Thought I'd share an experience tonight.  I was in Michaels to get some lichen with a coupon :), and wandered to the model aisle.  There was a father and his son looking very intently at the model kits.

The father asked if I was familiar with modelling, which I answered yes.  Then asked a bunch of questions about glue, paint etc. as he hadn't made one in 30 years. I gave them some advice and away they went.   The kit was for his son, who was at least 10 and showed an interest in making a kit.

Here's a great chance for a father and son to bond, and 1 if not 2 (maybe dad will reignite his interest) of them to become interested in the hobby.

While Michaels may not serve the modelling needs of many members of the forum, I think they still serve a purpose especially when the toy stores like Walmart no longer carry kits.  If this kit turns out ok then maybe he will continue with it.

With basic kits, basic testors supplies, essentially everything you need to get started and they often have later hours then most LHS its a good starting point for many.

Just thought I'd share that.

I shop at Michaels a lot.  They carry a fair selection of Testors square bottle enamels although their refill/stocking procedure is screwy.

However, I also find a lot of things for detailing and scratch supplies.  They carry a good selection of basswood and balsa.  Their jewelry section has an awesome selection of very fine chain.

They have paint brushes in several sections, adding up to an awesome selection at decent prices.

I have found an expanded aluminum mesh there, great for a number of projects.  Various beads and odd small shapes make good knobs and such.  They have an awesome supply of marking pens and roller gell pens for "painting" very fine lines.

Adhesive felt does interior upholsery, rugs for dioramas and several other uses.

Spray cans of Krylon primer are my most frequent purchase, especially with the weekly  40% discount coupons from my Sunday paper!

At the Micheal's near me, their model selection is pretty slim. But one thing that is very appealing to younger and new modelers are their prices. Unlike the LHS where it's impossible to find a kit under $20.00, most of the kits at Micheal's are less than $20.00. They may not have the latest Dragon super kit, but the ones that they do have are great for a youngster just getting started.

....and those 40-50% coupons weekly don`t hurt either! Sometimes I pull a H. V. Hammer and go in twice in one day...after a shift change....Wink
