What next?
Posted by DoogsATX on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 4:57 PM

My total cratering of interest in the Airfix 109 has opened up some space on the bench before the H-K B-25 ships ("opened" being used in an extremely loose fashion), and I'm looking at cracking another kit.  Since horse races are fun and this has been a blast in the past, I've set up voting for six kits (http://doogsmodels.com/2012/02/29/what-next/)

Here are the six I'm considering. Feel free to grouse about them here, but since I'm leaving things up to the poll, only way for a vote to count is if you go vote...

  • 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G-14 (will be built as a tall-tail G-6 of the Swiss Air Force)
  • 1/32 Trumpeter P-47N Thunderbolt
  • 1/35 Trumpy KV-2 (started in October, ready for paint)
  • 1/35 Tasca M4A3(76)W (started in October, ready for paint)
  • 1/48 Great Wall TBD-1 Devastator
  • 1/48 Revell PV-1 Ventura

Super curious to see which emerges...it's never the one I think it'll be...

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

If you're burnt on one 109, why would another one be a good idea right now?  The Swiss markings make it interesting but can you sustain the interest needed to get to that stage?  I burned myself out on 109's last year when I embarked on building one each from the big players- I know I would get disinterested in building another one so soon myself.

T'were I you and weather allowed, I'd work on painting those two tanks and getting them out the door and then work on some figures because they always need improvement.

Not burnt out on 109s...just 109s in 1/48th. They're just so tiny.

Well we are modelers, aren't we? And we do like Jugs after all, so............I vote for the P-47, even though you just finished one, but alas, this is bubble-topped.

Nice...it'd also be my first 1/32 Jug...probably bigger than the 48th PV-1 actually!

Quick count as of this morning shows all over the map with no early frontrunner. This will be interesting...

1st - PV-1 (6 votes)

2nd - TBD Devastator, Trumpy P-47N (5 each)

3rd - Bf 109G (4)

Both armors lag at 2 each...but wouldn't be the first time something's rallied back from being down early.

Give 1/48 109s a try Doogs, they end up looking pretty swell and build real fast. Now a 1 48 Yak 3 or I-16, thats tiny! Whatever it ends up being I'm sure you'll do it justice.

You're almost certainly right (and yes, I've built Eduard's Yak-3 and it is a tiny bugger!) - but I've figured out that, if interest in a build craters right before I take it on, it's much better to shelve it and do something else.

Being a sucker for russian gear i would vote for the KV2. Especially since you had that plan with the chains for it...

On the other hand... that Ventura is really interesting to see built up before i go ahead and add one to the stashStick out tongue

So:

1.KV2

2 Ventura

3. Devastator

4. the rest

Richard - the Ventura's pulling a bit ahead...planning to keep this going through Saturday, so still loads of time for things to shift.

Done... voted for KV-2!  You know me... wingy things are little boring.  If you do KV-2 are you still planning to fill it up with chains like shown in the picture you posted earlier?  If you included that picture, no question it would have received more votes.  Something unique and less boring... Oh yes, it'd be getting chains for sure. I've actually considered a vignette with it approaching the bridge. Of course...still need to get the chains (and I've thrown a LOT of money at the hobby recently), materials for building out that vignette, etc.

Yes!  That picture I was talking about... thought it was way so cool!!!  I know you will do it one day but when?  Maybe you can use your veto power and build this instead.  Big Smile

Doogs I'd love to see you tackle the new GW TBD. I've got the old Monogram offering about ready to be called done and have the GW in the stash. I'd like to see your take on it as it looks great in the box.

I would vote for the ventura. I saw one at Hobby town last week and now wish my budget would allow for immediate aquisition.

PV-1! In 1/48? I've built them in 1/72 but never found a 1/48 kit.
