There was a discussion awhile ago on workbenches, but my shop was in such a need of a thorough cleanup I passed on the discussion because a picture would have been a mess. Finally got the bench and shop cleaned up a bit, so took this picture.
The uprights are basically two of those drawer units sold at office supply and department stores, the ones with casters. The resulting height was a bit less than I like, so I built simple open boxes from strips of particle board to raise the level. The top is cut from a 2 x 4 foot piece of particle board, cut to an 18 inch width so I can reach the tools easier.
I cover the top with white contact paper. When it gets too messy, I rip it off and cut another piece and stick it down. I have a lap apron clipped to the bottom of the top, with spring clips so it will pull loose if I snag it getting up. I drape it over my thighs. Catches parts I drop, and also catches paint and glue drips, which are very common, as seen in the photo :-(
Back is a piece of 2 x 4 foot pegboard, fastened to top of bench with angle brackets and another strip of particle board.
