I'm a bad influence uncle now.... :)
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 7:49 PM

So, I have a nephew who is about 10 yrs old, and who is just coming out of an ugly divorce between his mom and  his dad.  He doesn't have a lot of good influences since his Dad is basically a white trash beer swilling, gun shootin' firefighter who doesn't give the boy the attention he deserves.

I took it upon myself to try to get the kid involved in modeling, since it's a passion of mine as well.  I"m a stay-at-home dad full time during the day, and at night I'm a free-lance writer.  About a month ago the creativity took hold and I wrote the nephew an "official" U.S. Navy dispatch, complete with fancy words and security codes, tasking him with procuring some models in the interest of intelligence gathering.  I threw in a couple copies of FSM as well as two Squadron catalogs.

Yesterday, in the mail I got a thank you note from him, as well as a picture of his new modeling purchases.  As a dad myself, I just about melted.  It was awesome.  I hope this is a continuing trend.  Anyway, I wanted to post up a pic of the dispatch I sent him and the thank you note I got back.  Hope you guys get a chuckle out of it.

That is awesome. I wish i had an awesome uncle like that when my parents were getting divorced. Unfortunately all i had was the scary uncle. The awesome uncle having passed some years earlier (My cousin is still cut up about that)

Fortunatly my dad was into models, and when he left i inherited alot of his gear.

Enough about me, your not a bad influence, your a good influence. Like i said, wish i had an uncle like you.

That's freacking AWESOME man!
I wish that I just had an awesome somebody in my family...
They're all teachers and that, all having their cramped ideas of how kids get smart and that sort of Censored
(by school offcourse, whaddayathink?)

I love how you made it so 'official' with that letter you made and all!
If I only had somebody like you in my life...
I'm just happy IPMS excists, because of my much younger age,
lot's of those guys feel like good ol' uncles to me!

I'm gonna keep this in mind when I will have some kids of my own or nephew's. Smile

With regards, Ninetalis

Sorry, I didn't mean to impugn ALL firefighters with my statement there.....just that one.  Most of you guys rock.  :)

Your Kharma is going to be intact and strong for quite some time now. Not only were your actions noble and admirable his reaction is immensely encouraging and positive. Thanks for reminding us what doing the right thing is all about.

Aha! Now that kind of bad influence is awesome! My step-grandfather was in the ARMY.Only after I enlisted in the NAVY did I ever feel close to him.I knew he served in KOREA but he would NEVER talk about it.When I came home on leave and was building a model of a RUSSIAN tank(I think it was AURORA,S T-34)

.He sat down and asked me point blank." Have you ever heard of CHOSIN RESEVOIR ?"You could have knocked me over with a feather. He would gift me with F-86 models and MIGS and I always wondered why those particular A/C.Now I knew.He talked until the tears overwhelmed him. He said that until I had on a uniform,I wouldn,t understand. He was right! This is a man ,that by his quiet demeaner and slight speech, taught me how to be a "MAN " not just whatever.

.Models played a part till he left me at age 96. He has ,and always will have a place in my heart and mind.Men who went before and care about the young ones around them are special.May you be blessed with many good hours with the Nephew.      TANKERbuilder
