An Obsession?
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 2:57 PM

How many of you find that when you are working on a project, that during some other time of the day, during a quiet moment that you are idly day dreaming, or perhaps first waking up in the morning, or whenever, that your current build project is on your mind? Maybe you hit a snag, and the solution for your problem came to you overnight, or perhaps you thought up another way to jazz it up just a bit? Does this happen to you? Seldom or often?

I'll get "Ah-HA!" moments from time to time... The wife always wonders WTF just happened because 90% of the time, I'll actually say, "Ah-HAH!" and run off to the war room...

Yes, very often. When I run into a problem, I've learned to stop physical work, but my mind continues to work the problem. And yes, that continuing to work the problem in my head, is like an obsession. Eventually I will think of a solution and start on the model again.

I often find mysef sketching the aircraft I am modelling during boring office meetings. So, yes, often.

I understand this is very common in many different lines of activity.  Who was it that dreamed of the dancing circle of snakes when he was trying to figure out the shape of some organic molecule (benzine ring, maybe).  I have heard that Einstein got a lot of his physics ideas when relaxing with his violin.

I have more ideas on solving snags on model projects away from bench than I do at the bench.

I also find at the bench when doing very repetitive tasks (carving with wood on scratch projects, rigging on ships, etc.) that my mind is wandering and thinking about stuff that has no relationship at all with modeling or the subject of the project I am working on.

It happens all of the time. Sometimes it even happens while I'm working on the model.

Frequently! Sometimes I'm thinking about the current project, either a problem to be fixed or just planning the next step. Quite often I'll find myself thinking about the next one too.... I probably need to stop thinking so much & do a little more often! Bang Head

An obsession of mine is not knowing when to call it "good enough" and call it complete.  I always tend to keep tinkering with details like seam filling, weathering, painting, whatever.  I have dimished my results on several models by overdoing it and then regret that I didn't call it a "wrap" and leave it alone.

I get up early and run several mornings during the week.  That's when I seem to work a lot of things out in my head, particularly after a couple of miles when the endorphins kick in.

Also at work when I'm stuck in a meeting listening to a boring speaker that has nothing to do with my job and I'm trying to pretend like I'm interested...

I do the same thing in our quarterly meetings. Thinking about the kits waiting at home, what I need to do next, and what paints I need to get. Makes the meetings go by faster. Especially when the medical director is up there talking about something that's above my pay grade.

When I read the very first post that started this conversation, my first thought was "Dude, chillax.  It's just a hobby."  I was on my high horse.  But then later that day, I saw that in my company break room, we had that artificial sweetener that comes in the blue packets.  I had read on another forum where someone said that the stuff made perfect "snow" for dioramas.  So with nobody around, I opened up a packet and dumped it on the black countertop.  At that very instant, I realized I might have a mild obsession with the hobby.  LOL!  You never think it's going to happen to you!!!!

Eric

PS.  Yes, I made sure to clean up the mess I made.  Embarrassed

Sometimes my issue is jumping ahead to the next project and thinking of all the things that I'll need for it, especially when I'm near the end of my current build. I need to focus on finishing the current build first.

I'm not thinking about it all of the time, but it's close.  When I'm not thinking about what I've got on the bench right now, I'm planning builds and diorama projects that probably span the next three years and far exceed my current skill level.  I figured it was because I'm only recently back in the hobby, but after reading all the replies to your post, now I'm thinking maybe it's not ...
