I am doing this one ,because I wondered all these years why ?Yes,I knew about these things years ago.It was recently brought to the fore by my working on REVELL,S "HAWAIIAN PILOT " Yup,the same ship that started out in real life as the U.S.S.BURLEIGH.No kidding !Now I don,t know if the chicken or egg came first in the model world.I do remember cutting two lawns and rushing to my LHS and getting the ship model named above.
The "HAWAIIAN PILOT" ,Gosh , that brought out the wanderlust in this little boy.A real life freighter, one that went to places kids back then could only dream about. The model sure looked pretty on my shelf.Even if it did have seams through the portholes and those ubiquitious pin marks.
Did you know there are exactly 118 of those little puppies? Some are faint and some jump out at you like manhole covers sunken into the pavement .I ,of course ,like many young boys didn,t know they didn,t belong there. All these years later I am re-doing this 1/380,or is it 1/400?kit. The one kit(HAWAIIAN PILOT) says the first and the other ( BURLEIGH) says the second.
No matter,I just thought I would give you something to think about.ALL my early REVELL ships are full of these pesky things. The only one I don,t know about is the U.S.S. MISSOURI of which I never even have built or bought a model of,go figure.Anyway think about those flaws when you build your new HI-TECH latest release from TRUMPETER or DRAGON ,oh yes,TAMIYA and HASEGAWA too. These REVELL kits were the smallest wave of things to come, and that is why I will always have a REVELL early ship to make me take stock of how great the hobby is now.
