Just make sure you give it a FULL 48 hours to cure before you handle it for decaling..

Hans,

This is excellent advice...and just what I was hoping for. I'm going to give your Krylon paint a try. I'm not looking forward to all the masking, but hey, that's part of the show, I guess.

I'll post pictures when it's all done, hopefully in a few weeks. Wish me luck, and thanks again.

"El-Lobo II" is a Natural Metal Finsih" (NFM in modeler-speak)...

B-17s have aluminum skins with fabric-covered rudder, ailerons, and elevators...  So you're starting with "Aluminum" as the shade of color needed..

NMFs are some of the most beautiful finishes to look at, and they're also the most difficult to achieve... There's a whole slew of things you need to do to do it right...

This thread will take you the one with the most information of any on the frum..

/forums/t/127602.aspx?PageIndex=1

Just about every type of NMF is discussed...

As for spray-painting..

That's what I do.. Krylon's "Premium Silver Foil Metallic" in a rattle-can is about the best "silver" paint out there for NMFs I've ever seen.. With proper surface prep and application, the stuff reflects almost good enough to shave in.. It's expensive as Krylon goes, about 8=9 bucks for an 8-oz can, but wirth it, IMHO...

Once it's cured (about 48 hours), you can handle it bare-handed and doen't require buffing, sealing, or anything else...

I don't know what you mean, but I mean just copy the complete thread and post it down in the aircraft section.

With regards, Ninetalis.

I think you'd better throw this in the Aircraft section, you will get more and better responce out there for questions like these!

With regards, Ninetalis.

Revell B17: fuselage color of El Lobo
Posted by groovybill on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 11:40 PM

I'm sure this post could fit in any number of existing forums, but as a newbie, figured I'd just throw this out there.

I'm relatively unskilled as a model builder, although I'm just about finished with the assembly of the Revell B17, 1/48. (Man, painting--or trying to paint--those engines was NUTS! I need a steadier hand, better eyesight, new paint, and finer brushes...but anyway)

The instructions sheet shows all the decal locations for the El Lobo version, but it doesn't actually say WHAT COLOR the fuselage is supposed to be. Of course, throughout the instructions there have been directives saying to paint something fuselage color, and since I started this thing about eight years ago and just recently came back to it, I know I've swapped back and forth between Testor aluminum and Testor silver on those parts.

So, is the fuselage of the B17 supposed to be silver? Or aluminum? Will spray can paint be okay? I don't have an airbrush kit. Should I prime it first? (The plastic color is light gray so I don't know if painting silver or aluminum on top really requires primer.)

Any help would be appreciated. Just found this forum today and am looking forward to learning more about model building from y'all!
