Call-signs...
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Thursday, June 14, 2012 12:17 PM

Using my real name, I got "Gypsy"...  Kinda like that one, although it flows against the idea behind call-signs..

http://www.topgunday.com/call-sign-generator/

Hans von Hammer got "Bass"...  Colonel Hans "Bass" von Hammer? Can't see that one painted on a canopy rail...

Dunno if they mean the guitar (which I play), or the fish (which I don't)...

And yeah, I know there's a joke with that and the REO album...  Let it go...

Hilarious. I got "Corndog" Kinda fitting. My wife got "Rambo" and my Daughter got "Bearmat".....I like the idea of "bearmat" has an image of running nails through the feet of would-be suitors.

Tojo, I know, saw it to, I even had 'boner' and 'wiener' at some point with a friends name, lol
(I'm not kidding I really had those...)

About the Flamer, I just mean, I rather have 'Flamer' than 'Hobo' or something...
(as long as you don't see it as 'Flaming' like flaming on a forum, you know? Which is, for people who don't know, 'hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity.' )

You guys just keep on calling me Ninetalis or Nine for as far as I'm concerned...

With regards, Ninetalis.

I'm not gonna explain, just... just read this...

basicly, call-sings are short nicknames given to make conversations on the radio easier, I guess, and to protect the communicators when you're in hostile surroundings and to keep secret information secret I suppose...

"Hobo" would be a more desireable call-sign, IMHO..

You're not thinking in "Fighter Pilot"...  In the world of "Top Gun" call-signs, "Flamer" would most likely mean that your squadron-mates are, shall we say, predicting the outcome of your next aerial-combat engagement, lol...

However, you'd likely be in better shape than if they tagged you with, say... , "Dead-meat".. Wink

Believe me when I say that my CAF call-sign didn't come from anything "cool" or "heroic" that I'd done, lol...

I got it in 1994 (which was, coincidentally, also the year that I received the "Golden Jackass" at the AirSho) and it was never "modified" (meaning I could keep it, alter it, or pick my own) until '98, lol...  It was embossed in Bright Silver right on my jacket-patch,  lol..

A word on the GJA. It's a trophy with a gold rollicking donkey and has your name, call-sign, and the AirSho date awarded on a small brass plaque, and it's given to whoever pulls the biggest, most assinine screw-up that does not result in injury to you or anyone else, and causes no major damage to or destruction of any CAF aircraft...  Howeverminor injury and/or damage does occur sometimes...

Sorry Hammer,

I will probable never be able to join the BAF because of the fact that the eye sight must be perfect and mine is an 9,5/10 (yeah really, not kidding...)
So I'll probable never know where you'd get your call-sign from.

Btw, I thought call signs were given to your squadron or wing, like Neptune-1, Neptune-2, etc., and not a different one to each person (so that is called something else)
or am I wrong?

With regards, Ninetalis.

Don't need good eyesight to join the CAF... Just a checkbook..Wink I'm talking about the Comemmorative Air Force, formerly known as the Confederate Air Force...

The stuff you're talking about is indeed, a call-sign, but this is for a "personal" call-signs, not unit or element call-signs... Those come from a unit's "Signal Operating Instructions" (in the US Army anyway) and change every 24 hours..

When personal call-signs (known as "Hollywood call-signs" in the US Military) are used, like in the movie "Top Gun", it's actually a communications security (COMSEC)-breach...

It gave me "Razorback". I like the sound of it, but I have only been to Arkansas twice...Hmm I wonder how they pulled up that one. My old LRS callsign was "Sinner", based on my last name.

I got 'Gloze'.

I've had many callsigns throughout my career, most are based on your position. Nowadays with frequency hopping, eavesdropping on radio frequencies is very difficult.

From memory, White 1, Wild 1, Animal 5, Black 5, Scorpion 8, Commanche 6, Hammer 6, but I was often called Sabot on the radio. That nickname stuck for decades.
