Mea Culpa, guys!  In reviewing how I was figuring the percentage of replies, and I find I was very incorrect in the figures I was using for "read" numbers.  The numbers I figured for the ratio of replies to read are wildly inaccurate.  Sorry for all the confusion- not nearly as many lurkers as I thought!

well, like others have said, many threads are questions, by the time I get to them, many are already answered. So no point in repeating the same thing.

I'm not lurking. I make random posts and then just leave.

It should be remembered that one does not have to be a registered member to read the forum.  A portion of the recorded reads will always be non-members.

Also note that the number of "Reads" really only means number of hits on that page. One may open a topic and find that it's not what they were looking for or it's not interesting enough to hold their attention to actually read it, and move on to another topic, but it still counts as a read.

But I am referring to the ratio of posts versus "reads"  So even of those who DO log on and read, in a sampling of threads, less than one in one thousand (or less than 0.1 percent) reply to a typical post.  I am wondering if the genii that computes reads is somehow counting wrong.

as a self admitted "lurker"  i agree with the other posters on this thread, unless i have useful information to add or i would like to be a part of a humorus thread being a silent participant is as enjoyable to me as trying to guide a new (or returning modeler) to how things work in then plastic world. I'm a human and I have an opinion but it's my responsablity to know when and what to post, this really is a great source of information and all here have something to add, some just haven't found the right spot to put it . happy modeling

we're modelers it's what we do

I always thought of these forums as a learning tool . When I`m trying to learn something I usually read / listen alot more than post / participate. Eventually I`ll either have a question or comment and then I`ll chime in. Seems natural to me to have more "lurkers" than "posters" in the forums. Big Smile

Like others, i will often look a thread but then feel i have nothing to add. Actually, i used to notice the number of views compared to the number of posts more on the old forum. I don't notice it at all now.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

It is just that according to the statistics FMS shows, fewer than 1 reader in a thousand replies to many of the threads.  That just seems like a pretty strange ratio!

Have you ever heard of the 1/9/90 rule of (online) community participation?

It's said that 1% of members contribute most of the activity, 9% contribute occationally and 90% are "lurkers".

Though I don't have statistics to back up the following comment, I believe the majority of forum posts were of current events and non-modeling related subjects prior to the demise of the O&E forum.

It is simply going to take some time to build up an active, posting clientele from the new members who replace the O&E gang.

Manstein's revenge

I belong to the Loyal Order of Lurkers, local  229...

So says the cat with 14459+ posts.

Wait...  I thought you were part of the Majestic Order of Jocular Outcasts, OM-229?

What gives?

ANYWAY....  Don,

It's not just the lurking that results in low participation, but also the low number of active "online" users.  According to FSM, we have over 52,000 modeler accounts.  On any given day we register less than .05% logged on.  And, of those, the majority are just lurking.

These forums can be great if participation went up.  By the way, I lurk more than I post. So I am pointing a finger at myself too.

I look at threads and sometimes I'm just looking for pictures, sometimes I'll post, but most of the time I don't.  One can only read "good job" so many times.

(I see this one has been viewed 154 times, and I'll be reply #14!!!)

I know there are threads that I look at that are "sorta interesting", but I either 1) have nothing to add, or 2) really don't want to see keep popping up to the top of my "your conversations" listing. Although, I don't think that system works the same way anymore...

The term lurker has been around as long as forums (and newsgroups). It basically means someone who just reads the discussions but doesn't respond or take a more active role in the discussion. There isn't anything negative to it.

Many folks still abide by the unwritten rule taught to them when they were children; "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

I don't mean that they would say something negative in a thread, but that they don't have anything to add to the discussion so they stay silent.

In the early days of this forum, someone would ask a question and the first half dozen posts would all be something like, "Wait til (___) reads this; he's an expert and will have the answer."

I think it was a way to assure the original poster that he wasn't being ignored and that he asked the question in the right place and that there would be someone along who might know the answer.

I know in some of the eariest modeling forums (back in the 90s), many first time posters (and new to the world wide web) thought it was like 24/7 online help. They'd post a question or say hello and then 5 minutes later wonder why it wasn't answered. They'd post three of four more times in a span of 10 minutes, eventually get discouraged and leave in disgust. It was kind of funny and sad at the same time.

As long as I've been a member here, the term lurking was used tongue-in-cheek to describe people, usually themselves, as readers moreso than posters to certain threads...harmless goofing...until someone breaks out a dictionary....

I guess I hadn't thought of lurker, as used in forums, had a negative context, but at considering the normal meaning of the word, it certainlly does, so maybe I need a better word.  I am just surprised that some threads have thousands of reads, but only a couple of responses.

I do notice that these FSM forums seem very polite, with few flame wars, compared to most of the old newsgroups.  I guess these forums are well moderated whereas most of the newsgroups I participated in were unmoderated.  So I encourage folks to particpate more.  These forums are very nice to folks.
