Model kits in Walmart again
Posted by Gordon D. King on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 11:54 AM

I was in an area Walmart over the weekend. The store is now stocking model kits again. There was a nice selection of model airplane, boats and car kits. There also a big selection of paints and other hobby supplies such as brushes and knives. It is the first time in almost three years that a Walmart in my area has stocked these items. It means I don't have to mail order paints anymore.

What kind of kits did they have? Was it the same line that Hobby Lobby and Michaels carries? e.g. Revelogram kits

I noticed ours has some kits and some paints.  No acrylic paints, but they did have a rattle can of dullcote, so I don't have to drive 45 miles just for that.

If they have them on their website, they will ship it to your local Walmart for free.

Do they have the House Of Kolor little rattle cans back? I loved some of those colors.

Uh-oh! I was in mine Monday and didn't see them; I'll have to double check next grocery run.

Looks like this may be a US only thing - doesn't look like Canadian Walmarts are there yet.

Maybe in due time.....

I'll keep an eye out, but I didn't see them at the store here last week.

Checked for kits in several Chicago area stores.

No kits and store managers haven't been informed of any future kit additions to their stock.

When they start carrying Dragon armor kits, Eduard PE and Aires resin cockpit sets I'll start to care...

Busted down to a mere Colonel?Surprise

Few brick and mortar hobby shops in the Chicago area carry those items these days.

Those that did stock on a regular basis, now only order a few kit introductory samples; no PE or Resin sets.

Not enough wealthy customers buying to warrant stocking such items.

In any case, I doubt the majority of modelers buy such items.

If they did, kit manufacturers wouldn't be able to repeatedly re-issue and sell 40 + year old kits to distributors for resale to the public- n'est-ce pas?Wink

The Wal-Mart in Elizabethtown, KY has a small model section. I noticed a small rack with the tiny Testors square bottles in them (remember when they were like a dime?). I saw several car models, truck model, Star Trek, airplane kits and one of those Testors quick build M4A3 Shermans. There were quite a few model rockets (Estes flying stuff) with engines there too. Nothing that would take more than 60 seconds to look at everything, but a start.

(remember when they were like a dime?).

I still have some marked at .19, .25, .35 and .40. All are still good. And then I've a couple from Hobby Lobby ($1.39) recently go bad on me after a few weeks.

Ditto.. .19 cents.. Had to buy them at the drugstore.. In 1968 Only "hobby shop for 50 miles was the spinning racks of Monogram, Aurora, HAWK, Lindberg, and Revell kits there and at the grocery store.. Drugstore had more aircraft than the grocery store, ehich was mostly AMT and Revell cars.. The pharmicist (and owner) was a former C-47 driver that flew "The Hump".. Even had a custom car license-plate, "C47 HUMP, lol)
