storing your magazines?
Posted by Texgunner on Thursday, September 20, 2012 10:52 AM

I had a subscription to FSM for many years, starting around 1989 and through 2008.  Obviously I accumulated a bunch of magazines.  Last night, in a somewhat futile effort to clean up the clutter in my study, I rearranged the stored magazines but I still don't like my arrangement.  Does anyone have a good system for storing/organizing these magazines, hopefully in a manner that keeps them accessible but neat and tidy.

To be honest, I rarely refer to them but when I read a reference to a particular article, it's nice to be able to look them up.  That said, I'm sure not ready to just toss them out.  I do have 3 of the binders that FSM sells, but those are fairly expensive.  Any good suggestion out there?  Thanks in advance my modeling friends!

I have bought several of the Leather coverd note-book type holders they advertise in the magazine that have the FSM logo on them.  I'm a few years behind again, will need to order some more.  Each folder holds a years worth of issues plus a couple of the "Best of" special issues they come out with.

Visit your office supply store and pick up a bunch of the plastic or fiberboard magazine holders. Once filled they sit on the shelf like any other book. They should hold 2+ years of FSM easily...other titles vary by thickness. Just label each with the contents and you have a nice clean and well organized library.

FSM also sells binders to keep back issues in. You can also find the magazine hangers which you insert into a 3 ring binder as well. I don't really like them, but they work and if you have a lot of extra empty binders the investment in the hangers is minimal. Again check office supply stores or any one of those catalogs selling stuff to help you organize your possessions.

I was using the Magazine hangers/sleeves that Hawkeye mentioned above and thought it worked pretty well for a minimal investment. (you know, depending on how fancy you go with the binders). Haven't been able to find them recently though.

Thanks fellas!  As I mentioned, I've used the "leather"-covered binders that FSM sells but found them sort of expensive.  I think a trip to Staples is in order, frankly, I had not considered that option yet, so I really appreciate the suggestion.  I'm thinking some simple bookcases made to fit under my counter in the study might do nicely.  That gives me the excuse to "butcher" some wood too.  Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming if you can.

Something else I do Gary - most of those generic binders have room for a slipsheet on the front cover - you can use that for pics of the front covers, notes about articles that are in each issue etc.,

I am a magazine junky for sure... I love reading model mags. In the past few years I spend more in a month on mags than I do kits often times. At this point I have all the different issues sorted by title and stacked flat on a 5 high shelf unit... I have considered the upright fiber board holders as Hawkeye suggested but I haven't found any that were cost effective enough to buy that many.

I just use the shorter comic boxes, myself.

I use "OfficeMax Plastic Magazine Files". Black. Item #: 21650642 They also come in clear. I've rarely seen the clear ones in the store.

$12 for a 4 pack (in store)

I've searched all over and this is the best deal on plastic holders.

The cardboard ones hold a few more and are a bit cheaper but can be a bit "tacky" depending on your office scheme.

Like Kugai, I use the magazine-sized comic book boxes available at comic book stores, stationery stores and sometimes places like Walmart. I use a file separator for year and have a box for the various titles. On the file separator, I often write down the month and subject of a review or article I think I may need in the future. That way if I ever need to look up an article all I have to do is peek at the file separators until I see the one that lists the article I am looking for. Then I thumb through that year until I find the magazine I'm looking for.

Or, you can go digital!  FSM is making available the whole bunch of magazines from the last 25 years on a two-set CD.  See current issue for details.  They will be ready for sale by the end of the year.

Yeah, I've pre-ordered that Chuck.  But, since I'm kinda "old school", I do like having the hard copies too.  Man, clutter is consuming me in my study.  I'm also a gun collector/shooter and most of my gun stuff lives in there too.  Ammo storage is becoming quite a problem...guess I should be shooting more of that.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi, TEXGUNNER ! I go to OFFICE MAX or OFFICE DEPOT and buy the magazine holders in either plastic or cardboard.A lot of mine are in the shop !

I also pick them up at yard sales. Now the ones that are used for "in and out" material is where the special referrence books are. That way they are in the shop and good for preservation ,laying flat.      TANKER-builder
