Selling my stash
Posted by corvettemike on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 12:34 PM

Or 3/4 of it anyway. Earlier this year the US Government banned several products I use consistently on my 1/24 cars and I simply can not find a suitable replacement. I tried ordering from overseas but it cost me an arm and a leg as well as took nearly 60 days for the products to arrive. That being said I have about 70+ cars, several 1/48 aircraft, 1/350 ships, and a clutch of aftermarket and my entire junk parts bin on craigslist as a lot for $600 OBO. What do you think is reasonable to accept as a "best offer" without getting ripped off? I was thinking $550 maybe but even that seems low for what I have, then I take in to consideration at last Sundays model fest I rented a vendor table and barely even broke even on the table cost because sales were so low.

They sell various "clear coats" in the spraypaint section of autoparts stores. Have you tried these?

Yes and not a single one comes close, they are either extremly unhealthy i/e urethanes or too caustic for styrene without special prep. I've tried everything from testors to krylon and cannot achieve the same results.

I'm not giving up the hobby, I still have a VERY respectable stash of Armor, artillery, ships, aircraft, 1/72 helicopters, spacecraft,  and large scale Sci-Fi figures. I'm just cutting out cars except for a small stash of what I think the 6 pack of tamiya clear i imported from japan will cover. However at almost $100 and a 60 day wait time it's impractical and more expensive than when i could buy it at my LHS. I'm pretty set in my ways, used every brand of paint out there, there's certain ways i do things and if I can't do them that way, then well, i just won't do it at all. EPA gets it's way we'll all be using school glue and water colors so long as the water is Brita filtered.

Tamiya paints are back in stock in local hobby shops now.  Just saw a full rack of them at my local store yesterday.  For clear coats, you can use Testors or Model Master (same thing) lacquers in clear, semi-gloss, or flat- works fine for me.

Regarding selling your stash- I have found it to be extremely difficult- you'll never break even, everybody expects to pay no more than ten cents on the dollar.  Better to donate it to a veteran's hospital or other charity and take a tax deduction if you really want to get rid of it.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I can understand being set in your ways. I've never really been interested in car models, but a big reason I've not tried one since my youth is because I just haven't been able to produce a finish that would be acceptable.

I'm not touching the EPA/government subject with a 10 foot wind turbine; forum rules and all. But I sure wish I could!

Exactly! It took me 15 years to get the right combo of products and techniques down and everything I've used other than Tamiya does not keep par. Not planning on spending another 15 years to find something similar to the colors (not the whole line of Tam was banned just the ones I use all the time go figure) to get back the results I'm accustomed to.

This is exactly why I tell folks that they have to learn how to use various types of paints, mediums, and materials.. Can't get stuck to "one way" of doing things, because somebody, somewhere, will ALWAYS screw your gig up..

Regarding your queston, though..  "OBO" will never get you much over 50% of your initial asking price..  Better to set a price and then remain firm.  No experienced modeler is gonna offer you retail, or even 75% of retail..

If you want max-dollar, best bet is to piece it out on Ebay..  If you have some kits that're rare enough, contact oldmodelkits.com. They buy collections, but they don't pay that great.. But you can get a really good idea what your stuff will be worth retail..

I don't know when you last checked on specific TS paints, but at least some are available again.  I heard about the label issues and there were some delays, but I've finally been able to get primer again.

You may want to double-check if it's been more than a few months since you last tried to get TS here.

TS-no number listed-Lime Green(Kawasaki Green)

TS-82-Black Rubber

TS-80-Flat Clear

TS-42-Light Gun Metal

TS-40-Metallic Black

TS-30-Silver Leaf

TS-20-Metallic Green

TS-18-Metallic Red

TS-13-Gloss Clear

Are listed as not available for sale in the United States. Basically all of these colors are struggling to meet chemical and aerosol regulations even though their labels are in english. The way I heard it from my LHS was when the TS colors were released after the relabel, these colors were turned away at the docks and will not be coming back. Oddly enough the law provides you can buy from Japan, but I couldn't sell it here or buy it on our soil. Kind of asinine if you ask me, if it's so bad why can I still have it imported? On that token to get it from Japan takes 60 days or more and costs $2.50 more per can + a boatload of S&H charges. That's just not worth it in my opinion. On the subject of using other mediums, trust me I've tried and NOTHING works remotely close to TS-13 that doesn't cost an arm and a leg or is otherwise completely impractical for hobby use. Some car guys swear by urethanes, I don't. They are far too toxic for my tastes. Testors has had bad reactions with some of my paintjobs, duplicolor takes special prep and is too hot to spray over TS colors etc...Rather just dump them for what I can to get them out of my clogged closet and not deal with it, hobby isn't supposed to be stressful.

The best of my knowledge they used to offer a gray variant that was discontinued in 2007, the white putty was the replacement. 8/24/2012 Tamiya USA lists it as "discontinued" however people are telling me they were able to find it at Hobby Link Japan in stock. I noticed the same "discontinued" label on TS-13 on the USA site, however Japanese vendors have it in stock regularly so it's only discontinued in the states.
