What to do with the display?
Posted by Maineiac on Sunday, October 14, 2012 1:46 PM

Hello:

I've been painting models for a while now, but when I first got into the hobby, the main problem I had was knowing what to do with the project when I was finished.

I got the bug years ago, when I saw someone had painted starships (I know, sci-fi, but meh), and put them on display in a nice glass case in his apartment.

That's nice, but I don't want to have to make room in my house for display cases. Right now, I paint soldiers for (mostly) sci-fi stuff. Part of the reason I do that is so I can put them all in a hard-shell case, shove them under the bed or in the closet until needed.

I love the dioramas in the magazine, and even the sci-fi and fantasy models can be painted for display, but I'm wondering: Is there anyone out there who doesn't keep them on display after doing them? If so, what do you do? Sell them? Tuck them away somewhere? What do you do?

All I build is dioramas, so I know what ya mean about display space..  Withe exception of about 20 dioramas, some big (17 x 17 inches or bigger), most small (less then 16 x 16 inches), I don't keep them.. I photograph all the builds, then after a few months, tear them down.. The photos I can keep forever..

I also have one helluva big parts-box..

Sometimes I "Lazarus" the models, and put them on another dio, or use them as the basis of a kit-conversion or kit-bash them.. Also, I keep stuff I've built from scratch, like windows, doors, roof-top sections, etc.. And te figures.. GAWD, the FIGURES! Got hundreds of them..

Selling them isn't my bag, although I do build a number of commission-builds.. I keep the photos of those too.

I just can't wrap my head around the concept of NOT displaying ones hard work!

If I kept everything I've ever built, I'd be displaying around 2,000 models and dios... No way that'd happen..  I know I could just display the models, but it drives me nuts to look at any of them and not see them "doing their thing"..

word.

I'm more proud of some than others, but having spent all that time building them, I sure want to see them displayed.  One of the reasons I started building planes, and the main reason I only build in 1/48 scale is so I can see them displayed together and compare their relative sizes.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I understand that NOT looking at them once they're done seems silly, and I WOULD spend some time admiring my work, but for me, the real thrill is in the building and painting, if that makes sense. Like Hans Von Hammer, I simply wouldn't have room in my home to indulge when/if the display side of modeling and painting ever took off for me.

What to do?

Same here, I invest a lot of time and attention in my models so I definitly want to be able to see the finished result. But I do most of my modeling in 1/72 scale so space is not so big an issue when compared to dio's and larger scale modeling.
