New Ebay Fees
Posted by plasticjunkie on Friday, October 19, 2012 6:03 PM

I've been away from selling in ebay for a while and recently sold a couple of things. I just got my invoice and they are charging a final vaue fee on shipping. I spent almost 45 minutes on the phone trying to get an explanation as to why I'm being charged a fee on the shipping charges that are the USPS rates, not mine. I had a VERY hard time understanding the lady who had a VERY thick Indian accent. They are farming out the call center to India to save money. The best explanation she gave me is that sellers were overcharging buyers on shipping so this way it cuts down on the abuse. What kind of reasoning is this? Talking to her was like talking to the wall. Ebay has gotten very greedy with their fees. As a seller you are required to have Paypal which they own, charge the seller a fee for the transaction, another fee for the final value of the sale, another fee to send you the money  and now a fee based on the shipping amount.

I quit using eBay about 10 years ago, when they started getting complicated, greedy, and confusing to use.  At first it was friendly folks dealing one-on-one, no PayPal, seldom any crooks, now it has become a gigantic marketing organization.  I'm out of there.

And I am sick of the call centers in India, in general - have to deal with them for computer help, cable TV service, phone service, whatever, and they are, as you say, hard to communicate  with the language barriers.

What she was trying to explain is that some sellers set low minimums, but have sky high shipping charges. Under the old system eBay was losing a big percentage of the total transaction amount.

Right about call centers. What I really fear though is when India grows a solid middle class, and the call centers move to less developed countries where English is not spoken.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I agreed with her about some sellers overcharging on the shipping costs but I and a lot of other sellers charge actual USPS rates. I refuse to deal with sellers that inflate or pad the shipping rates to make extra money.

I quit selling on Ebay 5 years ago.More often than not the combined seller fees plus shipping were more than i sold the item for I/E the winning bid was $5.00 and shipping + fees would equal $5.50.

Yeah, the hassle that is Ebay is just not worth it to me anymore either. I bought four models on Ebay last month, but that was after a drought of several years of no purchases from Ebay for anything. I was reminded why I don't buy off there anymore. I can pull down pretty good deals on Amazon, and the shipping is the only extra charge. I like simple.

I have never sold on eBay,don't plan to,but I have never had any problem buying,I can find just about anything I need at a good price.i just refuse to allow anyone to rip me off on excessive shipping,or participate in bidding wars. There are bargains to be had.

I also agree that Amazon is great,I have bought just about every household item you can find, but just have not been successful with models.

As Yogi Berra might have said, "Nobody uses Ebay any more; it's too busy."

I like Paypal but am not a big fan of Ebay any more. They keep making it more complicated and more expensive. I've never sold there and with all of Ebay's now rampant greed may never sell there. I understand their rationale about the excessive shipping charges that some sellers were using but the answer to that would have been to kick those B*&%%#)*%&#$ out.

As you said, some but not all sellers. They should have targeted the abusers instead of blanketing the problem . Hopefully enough sellers will complain for them to change their unfair policy. I can't find an email address to file a complaint on there, only the outsourced customer service phone number in India!

That is exactly why I don`t sell on Ebay, only buy. They`ve been barraging me with e-mails , trying to get me to sell something. I`ve been hearing bad things, like this, so the heck with selling on Evilbay!

What happens if you use PayPal as your payment processor and you use it to facilitate the shipping? It will calculate and print a prepaid shipping label for either USPS or UPS. PayPal is tied with both to provide shipping services.

So, I would think the fees charged should be more in line.

Everybody knows there are sellers on Ebay who overcharge for shipping, you just figure that into the cost of the transaction and decide whether or not it still makes sense.

Been doing some researching and got a better explanation on the web that from their Indian customer service rep. Some sellers were selling items at .99 and by jacking up the shipping, they were avoiding the ebay fees and were making free money. Ebay got smart and starting in July, they get a piece of the shipping charges. Now I can understand their side but that fee should go to the abusers, not all sellers. As I read, a lot of sellers have complained to the FTC but more than likely, nothing will be done since a seller enters a contract with ebay that says they can do just about anything since you agree to their terms.
