problem with scalehobbyist.com resolved
Posted by rumple on Sunday, October 21, 2012 1:11 PM

I placed a big order with them about a few months ago. They took a week and a half to even send the order. I had used them because they take paypal, and didn't want to wait for paypal to get my money in my account (big mistake there). When it finally got here the nieuport plane was missing it's stickers, and the contents of the box had been taken out, and put back in (it was a jumbled mess, compared to the spad).

Email correspondence:

I'll see about getting replacements for you. Please note that we don't resell previously opened kits, we sell kits exactly as we receive them from Testors.

Thank you for contacting us.

Scale Hobbyist Support

>> The testors nieuport 1/48 scale model did not come with decals. It looked as though the box had been previously opened, then glued shut again. The parts in the bag were put back in less than neat. I'm willing to forgive the box having been opened, as long as I can actually complete the model, with decals. Can you guys make this right? I just want the decals, not a hassle for a $7 model.

This was a month ago, and I have not heard back from them since. I'd shop somewhere more reliable..

Got another email:

Testors has been contacted about the issue, I'll follow up with them on Monday.

Thank you for contacting us.

Scale Hobbyist Support

So we'll see if they give me the run around with testors, or actually take care of the problem. I didn't order it from testors. They need to just send me my damn stickers already..

I see how you would be upset about this.  I want to say that for a few years now that I have ordered way too mush stuff :) from them.  I have only had one issue about one item missing from a shipment, and I emailed them and they had already shipped it and it arrived the next day....they found the issue before I emailed them.

Anyways, I have always had great experiences with them and hope that continues.  Maybe your issue is one in thousands....I sure hope so and hope your issue gets resolved quickly.

I used to order from Greatmodels all the time until last year when I placed an order from Spruebrothers. Got my order in about 3 days. Ditto with the second order. I love their sales too and they take Paypal.

They got my money and then agreed to send me what I ordered. If they can't do that right then they need to fix it. I don't care who's fault it is. Maybe it was Gods fault..   Anyway, if they send me the sticker sheet that should have came with the model I ordered from them, I will gladly sing their praises.

I made this post in the hopes it would help me to get my decals. Sometimes these guys wont lift a finger unless you give them a reason. I was hoping that you guys would want me to get my stickers as well. It seems you don't. I thought I could just post on here and it would move things along, but fanboys are fanboys. I guess I'll have to post on all the other modeling forums I can find, to get anything moving along.

OK, but your suggestion of people avoiding them because of an issue that in all likelyhood is not their fault seems detrimental to what you're trying to achieve.

Proffessordeath:

Okay, bull and bull. I don't really care what you believe. Ripping on a company is the only way to get them to do anything. Why would you lie and try to make it sound like this is my only post. I don't have years of posts on here, but I do have plenty, dated before this post. There's no way you could reasonably say this is the bulk of my posts and not be lying. This makes everything you say suspect.

You are flawed in your thinking "Ripping a company is the only way" I dont think you will get very far with this attitude but good luck to ya.

Maybe you guys are right, and posting on here is not the way to get things done. I found the BBB site, and it looks like I'll get better results from just filing a complaint through them.

6 out of 21, or maybe now 7 of 21 is still not the bulk. That was an attempt to misinform. I have put my whole correspondence with them. I was never nasty to anyone there. It's all right there, (if you had actually bothered to read before posting), from when I first complained and their last email, a month later, after I reminded them again. What I'm trying to accomplish with these posts is obvious. But what are you trying to accomplish here? I understand you don't like me for complaining about your favorite retailer. Duly noted. Anyway, it's been a month since I first complained, and they hoped I'd just go away. I'm not going to. Can I look forward to another post from you that's basically about nothing? Well, maybe this, or maybe that? I'm not going to repeat myself anymore either, or justify my actions to fanboys.

Hi Rumple,

I hope one of the main purposes of joining this forum wasn't to post rants about one particular company.  I'm sorry this issue of not receiving the decals has taken so long but there's always more than one way to skin a cat with problems such as this.  I'd think that a call to the manufacturer would have resulted in a quick resolution.  I think if this situation happened to me, I would have made a phone call or sent an e-mail to the model manufacturer instead of coming onto a web site just to blast the seller.

I can't explain why one kit would arrive in seemingly pristine condition while another one looks like it was opened up and resealed.  Maybe if an item arrives in questionable condition in the future, it would be a good idea to document it with photographs.  Who knows....Maybe the seller had to open your box in the past to send ANOTHER customer a set of missing decals.  It's also not uncommon for model manufacturers to goof up.  Stick around long enough and you'll hear about how people received two left wings an no right wing.  Or no canopy.  It's truly not that uncommon and it definitely isn't the seller's fault.

I hope things get settled for you but flaming a seller over set of missing decals and going to the BBB isn't going to make them magically appear any faster.

Best wishes,

Eric

Thanks Eric. No, it wasn't why I joined. I actually did email them immediately. I'd rather email then call.

Taking photos is a great idea, that I should have thought of.

"Maybe the seller had to open your box in the past to send ANOTHER customer a set of missing decals.", lol, Yeah I think that's what happened.

Complaining on a forum has worked for me in the past. So that's why I'm doing it now.

I've done all I can here, and will only add one more post to this thread. Hopefully it will start with "They finally came through....

Rumple, I know that there are a lot of other model-related forums out there.  I'm on three others aside from the FSM forum but I'll have to say that, speaking for myself, it seems that the other forums tend to exhude vitriol and animosity amongst its own members.  It's not exactly like that here on the FSM forum.  I hope that we (you, me & the rest of the forum) can get off to a happier start.

In my humble opinion, I'd suggest contacting the kit manufacturer from this point on.  I honestly believe you'll get the decals you need faster that way.  I've made purchases both on-line as well as from a local hobby shop where there's been something a little off with the kit.  I usually make one phone call (or in my latest case, an e-mail) to the kit manufacurer and, a week later, the replacement item I needed arrived on my doorstep.

I agree that if you've been wronged by a seller, then go after them but that's only if the situation is worth it.  But for a dollar's worth of decals (if not less maybe?), I'd say make the call or send the e-mail and then let it go at that.

Oh, and the other thing I almost forgot about is that this FSM forum really does have the friendliest group of people I've had the pleasure of interacting with.  Nine times our of ten, if you're in need of something espcially like decals, you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will step up and say "Hey!  I've got what you need.  They're all yours if you'd like them."  But, like they say, you attract more bees with honey than you do with vinegar.

Granted, I think the members of this forum (myself included) always appreciate the warnings of a company's questionable business practices.  Maybe we can all hit the great "do over" button in life and start this all over again with a happy greeting rather than a rant.

I'll join in with Eric and say "Welcome Aboard!"  Also, here's a few BeerBeerBeer's. It's just some decals. Hell, you can order a new set in any livery you like, almost, and for not much cash. Maybe time to relax and reassess a little bit?  Again, welcome!

Well, Eduard avoided me like the plague when I had an issue with them a while back but yet other members have posted only positive comments about their customer service. Sometimes its whoever is answering your email. It sucks when you buy something and parts are missing but unfortunately, it will happen eventually. From what you are saying, the vendor should have replaced your decals and then they can square it up with the manufacturer. I have ordered from them multiple times cuz their prices are cheaper but they take a little longer to ship, usually the order will reach me within 5-6 days while Sprue Bros. is in my hands in 3. I hope I don't run into a snag like you did with any future orders. Patienece is a virtue, and good luck resolving your issue.

I was going to type a long and helpful reply to all this until I realized all this butthurt is over a $5 model.

Honestly I don't know why SH didn't just send you a replacement kit and call it a day. But a lot of people (myself included) have had nothing but solid experiences with Scalehobbyist, and so coming here, starting a thread called "avoid scalehobbyist" - not "having problems with..." but "avoid..."...yeah you're going to get some people coming to their defense.

Also if you want a Nieuport 17, do yourself a favor and pick up the 1/32 Academy kit. Not much more expensive, but a really solid little kit with vastly better, well, everything.

Yeah I am of mind that one does not post a thread here like this based on a single minor incident. Unfortunately online hobby purchasing often does not have the same level of  service to fix a problem like this as does shopping at the LHS. That is our now 21st century version of the hobby. Most of the time for us one cant just hop in the car, drive a couple blocks back to the store, and exchange the kit for another. And doing it online may take time. They may not have no other of the same kit in stock and a replacement order has to be placed shipped and received. I had a similar experience buying at a local store where a kit part was missing and getting the replacement took weeks. I sidelined that build until the part came in. No rush, there was no time deadline on the build that I had to meet. Are you dying of a terminal illness? Is there some other time deadline for completing this kit? Life happens, we move on. All that aside, contacting Testors customer support is quite easy. When I have had to use them, service was superb and prompt. 99% of all of my online hobby transactions have been problem free. And when they have not been, I don't come on here and post a rant that really has no chance of addressing the situation. I fix it one way or another and move on.

I was being a bit of a ***, okay. It's Obama's fault. I've taken this dire issue up with the president, and you guys can continue on with your lives..

No, seriously what happened is they said Testors is going to send me the decals. That sounds good to me. These guys are popular for a reason. They really do have the cheapest prices around, and I'd know, being a cheap *** and all, lol. You all seem like a bunch of nice guys who want to keep your hobby strong. I can't help but to just admire and respect that.

I'll probably still lurk around in the shadows, learning cool stuff. Maybe one day I'll even finish that dern Constitution and contribute a little. Thanks.

Oh, and I'd like to change the title of this post to something nicer, add a "solved" to it, or just have it deleted entirely, if possible.

Rumple, glad you got it sorted out,,,,,,,,,there is a second chance way of fixing it, if you need it,,,,,,,,you can contact Testors by email on their site, and give them the kit number and other info and request the decals

also, you can go to your first post and hit the "Edit Pencil" at the bottom,,,,,when you are there, you can add info to your first entry, and change the Topic Title

hope this helps

Cool beans!  I'm glad it was resolved.  We're all here to help.  Lord knows I've received my fair share of missing parts and decals from the friendly folks here.

Don't ever feel you have nothing to share.  Every little tid bit of info is helpful and everyone benefits from it.

Best wishes!

I don't think people don't want you to get your stickers. I think they are saying you are blaming the retailer for the manufacturers issue. How is scalehobbyist supposed to get you the stickers, open another box and send them? Send you a new model and you ship back the old one?

When I've had missing pieces, I have contacted the manufacturer, not complained to the retailer.
