Be Careful,Spruebrothers Crashed my Compuer !!
Posted by Tojo72 on Thursday, October 25, 2012 10:49 AM

Actually it was more my fault. The other night I visited their site and was warned by my anti-virus program that the site was compromised and that I should avoid it.But I said to myself, hey it's Spruebrothers,I know them, there should be no problem.Wrong,as soon as I hit the button,my computer was infected with a virus that makes it look like your hard drive is erased, and then an ad pops up that says they can restore it if you purchase their program, yea right. My computer guru buddy came over last night and spent two hours cleaning out my computer. So I am back on line. But be careful of this one,it's tricky. He says someone must have hacked the Spruebrothers site.

Aha!  That's why the links that I received in an e-mail today from Sprue Brothers wouldn't open.  I figure they must have shut down the web site in order to fix it.  Thanks for the warning- fortunately I did not get that virus.  I think I'll stay away from there for a good long time.

So I just shut it down dead waited a half hour tried again all ok,I've had this probluem before I think some browsers don't like sprues new web site. I wonder if Spru knows of this probluem? This happened to me last January I got hit by someone from Romaneia then an ad comes up wanting you to let them clean your computer out while they put a vires in that steals your information you put in.

Yes Sprue knows about it and they have been unable to find anything on thier end that causes it.   It is safe to enter directly to the store site instead on the main page.

Thank you, Professor.  I have been using McAfee for years and it works very well, although definitely not free.  So far, it has warned me of risky connections, blocked trojan horse attacks, etc and nothing has ever gotten through. I run a full scan at least once a month.

Another good program to keep your computer optimized is Iolo System Mechanic.

I can highly recommend both programs to anyone.

About 2 years ago I was ambushed while checking reviews of Master Box figures on some site. Same thing about click here to clean your infected computer. Oldest trick in the book. You do that, input your credit card number and within seconds, your account is maxed out!

Took my computer to a repair shop and I told the tech that my Mccafee didn't catch it. He told me that 70% of the infected computers he gets in are Mccafee and Norton protected which he said are somewhat poor at protecting your computer. He suggested Eset Smart Security and so far it's been working out for me.  It has cought several Trojans and worms from regular sites. He also told me that Facebook is a good place to pick up junk from others. I placed an order last week with SB and had no problems at all but will stay away for a while just in case.

Thanks for the info.  I will stay away from Spruebrothers for awhile, too.  Meanwhile, if any of you guys have any further problems with the site, please post it here so we will be warned.  Thanks to all!

The phenomena you experienced isn't widespread. Otherwise everyone's AV software would be reporting trouble. It seems to be specifically IE8 users and those who reboot and revisit the site report the threat is no longer there. I suspect it is a random false positive. The website has been inspected by two internet security resources and reported to be clean. These reported warnings effects just the landing page, not the store pages as it is hosted separately. So if you want to shop, use the direct link:

https://store.spruebrothers.com/

I suggest clearing your cookies, as it could be what's triggering the warning when you visited the site. Again, this isn't being experienced by everyone visiting the SB homepage primarily IE8 users...so consider an upgrade to IE9.
