Painting transparent pieces inside or outside?
Posted by jvtroyen on Monday, December 31, 2012 11:17 AM

Hi all,

I'm about to start painting an Enterprise. As a kid, I used to paint the INSIDE of the transparent parts (red for Bussard collectors, blue for the warp nacelles) with non-transparent paint. Now that I have actual transparent paint, what is the best approach?

  1. Paint the INSIDE of the clear part transparent blue?
  2. Paint the OUTSIDE transparent blue?
  3. Paint the inside black/silver/... to create a higher contrast? (and the outside blue of course)
Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.

After a bath in future,I'd paint the inside with the trascent color, then maybe back that up with black/silver but that's just me

Not going to add lights, just looking for the solution that will yield the idea of transparency, while still clearly showing the color.

Hi:

I have found for that kick butt translucency you are looking for do this .In the center of the pieces , after tinting the color in ,use a small piece of foil chrome ,you have made .why ?

Well it has to be backwards .(ie.shiny side down , as it were .) Then overcoat with the last coat of color ONLY on the very center of the piece , on the outside. If your tint is a wash , then dip in FUTURE and " VIOLA" one very nice piece .
