we have a great LHS in denver, colpar hobbies which is now affiliated with hobbytown BUT NOT full blown hobbytown. IPMS gets 15% discount and my ship club gets 10%. anything new comes out i check the price online with shipping vs the store with discount plus tax. if the store price is more, usually but not significantly, i buy from the store. plus they know about model building. nice to know i'm 15 minutes from the smaller store but they will send stuff over from the larger store on the other side of town.

If I were an LHS owner, I'd sell the heck out of my personalized customer service and knowledge base. I'd make sure all my employees focused on product knowledge, and I'd make sure everyone who walked in the door got a friendly greeting and asked if they needed help. You won't see that at Hobby Lobby. There's no way to compete on price point, so you have to do it with customer service. I hope it works out for your LHS.

Return of the LHS?

After seeing literally a dozen local hobby shops come and go over the past twenty-five years, we had a new shop open last fall and it was just announced that Hobby Lobby is planning to open two stores in the area by the end of the year.

Not sure that it is the sign of anything significant, but interesting nevertheless.

Can't remember the last time I actually bought a kit in a LHS instead of online.

Through it all our one train shop has survived and been the primary local source for paint, glue, and other supplies.

Will be interesting to watch.
