Paint scheme for a Brewster buffalo at Midway
Posted by podcat on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 1:42 PM

Can anyone suggest an accurate paint scheme for a marine corps buffalo at midway, 1942?  Also, where can I get accurate decals for the marine aircraft at midway? Thanks for the help.

Midway livery would be overall bluegray up top, light gray underneath.

The red/white rudder stripes were overpainted on USN/USMC aircraft between Coral Sea and Midway. Likewise the red dots were removed from the insignia (and in many instances the fuselage insignia were made freakishly huge).

I'd check out Yellow Wings Decals. Doubt they'll have exact markings, but they do a lot of early war USN insignia, squadron codes and the like that would probably be a big help.

Paint scheme should be Blue-gray over light gray. Not sure on decals, but search for Aeromaster or Starfighter decals.

I dont think there are any specific decal sets out there for a Midway Buffalo. But if you pick up some generic 1/48 Early WWII US Stars, and the Yellow Wings 1/48 USMC Aircraft Squadron Code markings in Black (MF-__) that will cover just about everything you need.

I don't suppose the color really mattered that much for MW Brewsters.... after all, they weren't in the air that long anyway.  Got that one in the stash, looks like a fun little kit.

Not that day.  But they had been on the island for a few months prior to the battle and had actually shot down a snooping Emily flying Boat a short time before their decimation at the hands of the Japanese Carrier Striking force.
