LHS pickins' in DFW are slim.
There are two in Irving. MAL Hobbies is a small hole in the wall. It goes back to balsa free-flight aircraft models. Its floor is half model RR, half plastic. Good on references. Slim on current models. They buy estates so there may be someting in the vault.
Not too far away on Shady Grove is Wild Bills. It is a RC shop with one aisle of plastic. If you spend some time searching the jumbled stacks you may find a hidden gem. Their prices are somewhat high.
Otherwise its Hobby Towns & Hobby Lobbys. IMO, the HobbyTown in Arlington (I-20 @ Cooper) has a good plastic selection, better than HT North Dallas. I have not been to the HT in Plano recently, used to be good but they moved & changed a lot. The HT in Colleyville is good if you're into figures, and might be good for armor. The HT in Fort Worth, outside of JRB Carswell is poor. You must remember that HT also sells RC, Duplo, horses, kites, rockets and genberal gack.
There are Hobby Lobbys in many strip malls. Selection varies.
This Sunday 3/10/13, IPMS NCT will be having our semiannual kit auction. We meet in Irving at the Senter Park, corner of Senter & Shady Grove. Start about 130.
In May, Squadron opens their warehouse doors to shoppers as part of IPMS NCT's Scalefest Show. But you generally cannot walk in and shop. Its mail order & wholesale only
DFW is a hobby shop desert. We tend to order in.
