Yeah, it's really easy to overspend atthe big shows. Credit cards melt, they get used so fast.

Credit Cards?!  None of the vendors took CC's.  I saw one take a check, but I think he was friends with him.

Geez,, if they take CC's at Granitecon!?

Eagle90, most of our club will be there at some time or another. We usually travel in 1 car, but because Valley Forge is only about 1/2 hr. away, we decided to go separately. We've never been to this particular show before so it shold be very interesting. Maybe we'll be able to catch up with you.

Sound great.  I think it would be cool to hook up with people from the forum when possible!

Glad things went well at your first show.

Granitecon (Nashua) is a relatively small venue and can get quite crowded. It's about two hours from me and I'm not really interested in getting in for early bird specials. There are numerous places to eat with a Subway a couple hundred yards away on the same side of the road which is a divided road. A lot of us make that quick run since you don't have to move your car.

There used to be a Hooters a mile or so away which was a good option, too. No Chik Fil A for me for several reasons I won't get into here.

NIce photo gallery. One thought on those Tamiya sand bags, though, if you paid a dollar that's about 99 cents above their value.

If you go to Granitecon, we'll have to get you to help with judging. It's a great way to get to know people and to look at the models up close as well as learning what goes into a really good build.

This last year, I had a hard time finding much to buy, but the year beofre, one guy was cleaning out his stash and had some excellent prices on armor, often with aftermarket goodies thrown in.

You mentioned a national level show. The closest one you're likely to find is the MFCA figure event in Valley Forge PA.This year it's 10-11 May at the Valley Forge conference center/casino. It brings in an international group pf painters/builders and sculptors. Some of the regulars there are Shep Paine, the grand daddy of the modern model diorama and John Rosengrant who is a special effects artist who has worked on such films as Jurassic Park and Alien. he's also an excellent sculptor and painter. There is a huge vendor area with some plastics, several top ontch online vendors and others who sell pre painted collectible figures. Belle and Blade are  there selling hard to find DVD's of all kinds of historic/war/western movies as well as their line of "Tour T-shirts," e.g. Sherman's BBQ Tour of the South, Napoleon's World Tour, as well as shirst celebrating Vikings, templars, andv arious military units. The club has a hospitality suite Friady and Saturday nights to sociallize with your new found friends onthe club's dime. A slightly smaller show with international flavor is the Long Island Figure Show in November.

Unfortunately, due to the costs of venues in the northeast, basically everything north of DC and east of Ohio, there's very little likelyhood of the IPMS nationals coming here. The closest they've been have been in my memory have been Dayton and Virginai Beach. This requires at least a 4 or 5 day rental of a convention hall. A two day event in Sturbridge MA at a hotel was $10,000 10 years ago. Being a hotel, the cost was offset by rental room sales and a minimum at the banquet catered by the hotel. A convention center may not have a related hotel.

Hey ajlafleche,  It was a great first experience.  I know each one I go to probably won't be like that, but what a great first time!  I met Frank B and his wife.  Very cool people.  Frank and I saw I had purchased the 1/48 Canberra and he walked up and we started chatting.  Bomber pilot!  Very cool stories!  His wife was manning hte admission desk and she was laughing at me for making so many trips back and forth to the car!  Embarrassed  Too funny about the sandbags.  After I got home and pulled them out, I was laughing.  But hey, for $1!  They asked if I wanted to judge, but I didn't know if I'd be able to stay all day or not.  If I go to the Granitecon, I'll probably spend Saturday night there and maybe even Sunday, so I think it would be great to do that.  And thanks for all the info on the bigger shows.  Great stuff!  This show had 5 vendors.  There were 3-4 tables that said vendor, but I guess they were no-shows.  And you saw about how many models there were on show there.  A little bigger would be cool, but I think I'd slip into a coma at a big national one!

Eagle,
I've never been to a show before, I have only got into modeling just recently after thinking about it for a very long time. I've spent so much time reading and watching videos and working on my first couple builds, I'm really looking forward to going to a show and talking to some real people about their techniques and experiences!

I'm all for getting there early to get in on some good deals and getting first pick on some new kits!

G-J

Great write-up.

Glad you had a great time.  It's nice to hear success stories like that.

Thanks.  I could have gone on, but didn't want to bore everyone.  Over all it was a great experience.  Even making me think about joining the "local" club.  Those guys were really cool and loved to talk about anything models.  And all (but one or two) were eager to pass on what they know.  Can't wait to go to another one!

I mentioned it to her and she is interested in a weekend get away.  Thanks for the info, we will be looking into it.  I just noticed the show is on Sunday 9-4.  I got to this show about 15 early and sat in the car for about 10 minutes and couldn't stand it anymore.  They were more than willing to let me in, so I think that helped me get some of those "early bird" specials.  The one vendor who had the crazy low prices, the others swept through like locust before I was finished.  So if I go, I plan on getting there about 15 early and doing some recon before everyone gets there.  Of course, if this is a bigger venue, things could be very different.  Have you ever been to a show before?

I don't know, if I asked her to join me she would go. It's close enough to home she could leave early or meet up with me if she wanted to. I don't think she'd last the whole day though lol.

Chick Fil A is in the Pheasant Lane Mall, not the quietest place to eat lunch but their sandwiches are delicious anyway!

If you're going to bring your wife you may consider making a weekend out of it.. Portsmouth is a great place to spend a nice weekend away and is only about 45-60 min from Nashua, not bad for a morning drive.

I find airbnb.com a great website to find good deals on places to stay. I always filter by searching for a whole apartment rather than sharing rooms with strangers. We have found amazing deals on renting whole apartments or houses for cheap. Once rented a very nice apartment in Montreal for 80 bucks a night and a really cute house on the beach near Jacksonville for around 150 a night. Both were considerably less than comfortable hotels and much, much nicer. The added privacy alone makes it worth looking at, it's always my go to site when we need a place to stay for vacation or a weekend away! (No, I don't work for them, just good words for a great service, lol)

Sounds good to me.  Would your wife be interested?  Mine says there is a rumor there is a Chik-fil-A near there.  Any intel on that?  We don't have many cool places to eat here.

I'd love that! I'd love to grab a bite or chat over a drink! I'm glad to hear that it's a larger show, I'll have to set aside enough cash to start building a nice stash!

Hey Eagle, sounds like it was a really awesome time.. Happy to hear all about it. Man you made out pretty good in the kits department!

I'm bummed I didn't get to make it this time but there are a couple more shows in our area this year, one in Nashua, NH and one in Mass. Those will only be around 45 min from me so I won't be missing them. Hopefully you'll be able to go and we can chat it up!

Thanks again, glad you had a great time.

Hey Jeremy, It was a great time!  Everyone was talking about the one in Nashua.  They said it was about 3x bigger than this one!!!  I'm thinking it is about 3 hour drive for me, but I am seriously thinking about it.  There were only 5 vendors at this one, but I know at least 2 of them go to the Nashua show.  Let's try to hook up if I go, lunch is on me!

Glad to hear your first time at the rodeo was a good one.  I remember going to that show years ago great time and great deals, and speaking of deals looks like you did all rightYes  Is it me or does your link to the show not work.

Well I went to my first model show!  Lots of people wanted a report of how it went, so here it is.  In a word....WOW!!!!!!!!!

I had an AWESOME time!  All the advice everyone gave me really paid off.  I meet some really cool people and learned a lot from just about everyone.  You had a couple of really ate up individuals who where so into themselves and their builds that they didn't have time to talk to you, and god forbid you asked them how they did something.....geez man, I'm not going to copy your work or sell it to the enemy!  But those were few and far between to ruin an awesome experience.  The next person you'd talk to would spill their guts on how they did every little detail.  I sat and talk to one person for close to 45 minutes!  The dude actually broke one of his models showing me how to do a certain technique!  He was like oh well, fixed it and pressed on.  I thought seeing the models up close was great!  I got to see many of the kits I want to get.  The vendors were awesome too!  More on them to come.  There were not a ton of builds, as you can see from the pics, but what was there was really good!  The Enterprise had lights and fiber optics, some models had sound effects, the Brummbar had a switch that lit up the interior!  Very cool.  Sadly, there was only one younger modeler there.  He looked to be about 12-13 and he did the 2 Start Trek vessels and the USS Jersey next to them.  He did a really good job and he was really cool about it too.  Wanted to tell you all about it.  I talked to him for about 20 minutes about the USS Jersey.  He did research on the boat and was telling me some of the history about it!  It was awesome!   Anyway, enjoy checking out the pics.

Vendors.  This was a scary issue for me.  Being my first show, I wasn't sure how to handle haggling prices, ask if they would be interested in trading, anything, but again, the advice you guys gave was spot on.  First vendor I hit was cool and I picked up ERTL's Star Wars Imperial Tie Fighters for $15!  I didn't haggle with that!  The next vendor was an experience!  It was the table for the NY chapter and they had a ton of kits!  I looked at them and could not believe the prices.  I had to ask if all the parts were there!  I was the first one there (I got there about 15 before opening and they let me in!) so I was talking to the guy and pulling kits.  Before I was done, a swarm of people came in and started grabbing kits!  It was crazy!  Here is what I got from them: 1/48 B-29 $15, 1/48 B-24 $10, 1/32 Storch $10, 1/32 F-4 $1 (yeah $1!!!!!!!!!!!), History Maker V-2 $5, 2 kits of figures, one of sand bags, and a diorama set from Testors...$1 each!!!!!  I missed out on 1/24 Airfix Bf-109 and  2 1/24 Spitfires for $10 each!  I wasn't fast enough.  The next vendor was all about cars!  I didn't think I'd find anything there since the only vehicles I'm looking for is the 1980 Trans Am Daytona Pace Car and the General Lee!  Well wouldn't you know, there in the bottom of a pile was the pace car!  I promptly tackled...I mean grabbed it and let out an evil laugh,,,,,like I've said, I need help!  If there was a bummer moment for the whole thing it was when I got home and really checked out all the kits to find out the pace car was below standards.  I paid $20 bucks for it, but I had a great time talking to the guy and got some really good advice from him that paid off while there.  So, on to the next vendor.  This guy had the high end stuff and prices to match.  I looked and saw a couple of kits I liked and wouldn't mind giving a home to.  Now the previous guy was the first I asked if he would be interested in trading.  He was very willing and took a look at my "large" list of 15 models.  But, being a car guy, I had nothing he was interested in.  But he told me the vendor I was at now loves to trade and is more than willing to work with his prices.  So, I ask the guy about an Airfix 1/48 Canberra.  He pulled it out from the bottom of a pile and handed it to me and told me to open her up and check it out.  EVERY vendor was more than accommodating when it came to checking out models.  I know, why didn't I check out the pace car better?!  Heat of the moment!  Anyway, the guy had a sticker price of $29 for the Canberra.  I wasn't too familiar with the cost of a 1/48 Canberra, but I thought it was a fair price.  I'm pulling the cash out and asked if he would like to see my list of kits I'm willing to part with.  He got all excited and said yes.  He asked if I had any 1/48 F-4's.  Now we are getting somewhere....yes sir, I have 2.  He checks out the list, I finished counting out $22 (the offer me made me while talking about the Canberra), and he asked if I had my 1/48 MH-60 with me.  Yes sir.  I'll trade you the 60 for the Canberra.  I stood there staring at him.  Now let me know if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking a Airfix 1/48 Canberra is worth more than a 1/48 Academy MH-60G Pave Hawk!  I'm thinking he must think I have something else.  I asked if he was sure, and he was asking if it had the decals, sealed bags, etc.  Yes sir it does.  He wanted to trade.  He even told me to take the Canberra and take it to the car when I got the copper.  Uh, thanks, but let's make sure you are happy with the kit first.  I came back, he checked it out, and handed me the Canberra!  I was floored!  I think I got the better end of the deal, but this guy was as happy as I was with the trade.  I felt like a kid at Christmas!  So I went around and took pics, didn't win anything from the raffles, but was just about ready to go when I made one more round to see if I missed anything.  Told everyone I had met goodbye and stopped at the vendor I traded with last.  Now he had a 1/48 Airfix EE Lightning that I just loved.  I was looking at it and he came over and we started talking again.  He had a sticker price of $30 for it and he told me $25 would take it home.  I thought you know this guy was the first person ever to trade with me, so I was like sure!  I threw in my 3 raffle tickets for him to have for the remaining raffles!

I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that my first model show was super duper!!!  I had a great time, made some friends, and got to check out some really great builds!  I am going to make an effort to go to as many of these shows as I can!  My goal....go to a big national one!  Anyway, enjoy the pics!  Oh, the first pic is of my spoils of war!
