Neighbors...
Posted by stikpusher on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 11:36 PM

So today I bought a book case/display case from my new neighbor across the street. We just moved into our current home a few months ago. I helped carry it into my garage, which also happens to be my stash and work area. He saw my armor stash and comments, "I have a model I would like you to build for me..." I then point him to one of my display areas and he compliments my work. I know from our few meetings that he is a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran. When I go back across to his home to pay him for the unit, he steps away for a moment and returns with this kit

it turns out he was an Amtrack crewman on this particular variant in Vietnam. I have always wanted to build one of these. His co workers had bought it for him before he retired from his job several years back and it sat in his closet, but apparently he is not much of a modeler. I may not get to keep it, but I get to do the fun part. So now I get to do it up right to honor him. The sort of project you can not help but love.

You should see if you can find an interior for that kit. I think Hobby Fan did it.

Always cool when you can tie a project to a person who was ther!

Rob,I thought about the Hobby Fan interior. I will have to check with him and see if he is interested in that.

Vance, it definitely does kick up the inspiration level for a project when it is for somebody who has "been there/done that".

I know my local hobby shop in Louisville had a number of HF items for this kit in their clearance bin. Even at half off, it was steep. Don't know what was left, but I clearly remember seeing the recovery set conversion.

The interior set was HF010, the recovery set was HF011, a sandbag armor roof set was HF516 and a set of 5 Marines to ride on top was HF515.

I have this kit - started building it like six years ago with scratchbuilt interior. Then lets just say the model was destroyed, but I didn't give up - bought another one, this time with HF interior. As for today it still waits to be restarted. My scratchbuilding experience told me two things: 1) There is not so much reference for this on the Net 2) the HF interior also has some issues to correct if you want to be really accurate.

In spite of 1) input from a vet would be very valuable and I'd just love to see what new data comes up when you  start to build, so IMO many people would be grateful, if you documented your build really good.

I wish you good luck with your project and have a nice day

Awesome, stikpusher!

Bill.

On the bench:  Lindberg 1/32 scale 1934 Ford Coupe and a few rescue projects.

In queue:  Tamiya 1/35 Quad Tractor or a scratch build project.

Well I had a good discussion with my neighbor today about his track and this project. It will be modified in a few ways from the kit- the cupola .30 cal. will be not be installed, and instead a tripod mounted .30 cal. and .50 cal. MGs were placed on the roof. And after over 40 years, he still remembered his vehicle markings/bumper number... sweet!

I seem to get lucky with having at least one good neighbor where ever I live...

Well I kicked off this build last night and finished step 1 a short while ago... the running gear. 18 road weels per side on 8 double bar arms. Step 1 has you build 16 as they are identical, as well as the sprocket and idler wheels...

This will be a slow project as I will be making modifications and scratching some interior for it- the Hobby Fan set is out of my price range, but photos show a fairly simple troop compartment.

Hello!

Off to a good start. Once you get past the tracks, it gets a lot more interesting. About the interior - please re-think that with the scratchbuilding. I tried it once, and it can be done - but I didn't make it. It's more complicated, than it looks like. Here's how far I got:

The real trouble is the area around the emergency exit hatches, and the crew stations, and the ramp opening mechanism. Buying the resin kit in the end isnt much more expensive than, say, doing the floor in PE metal, but saves you a lot of life. The HF resin kit still has places that leave some room for improvement, like, say, the fire extinguishers.

Good luck with your projects, have a nice day

I actually found some PE treadplate for the floorboards for dirt cheap at a LHS (under $10). Unless somebody at AMPS here has the Hobby Fan set that they are willing to part with for super cheap, tracking down one at anywhere near MSRP is not an option for me currently. Pavel, your scratch work on the interior looks pretty damn good there I must say! Yes I can imagine that once I am past the sides and suspension it will get far more interesting.

BTW, I started a new thread over in the Armor forum where I will be updating this build, if you care to keep track of it.
