Too Good To Be True?
Posted by USFDon2012 on Saturday, June 8, 2013 1:58 PM

Greetings fellow modelers!

A while ago, I was planning on building a 1:48 scale P-40C that belonged  to Ken Jernstedt of he 3rd Pursuit Squadron of the American Volunteer Group (The Flying Tigers.)

After much searching, I knew that the decal set I wanted for this plane existed, but was no longer in production. Admitting defeat, I stopped the search for this set and moved on to other projects. That was six months ago.

Last night, out of sheer boredom and slight stubbornness, I went scrounging around the internet to see if I could find any other sources for this particular decal set or any other way to reproduce my own set of decals for this bird. I end up stumbling upon a website from a company in Italy called "MisterKit" and they claim to have the very thing I need in stock.

Without thinking I reach for my credit card and am about ready to buy this decal set when I say two very important things to myself: "Hey this is too good to be true" and "Caveat emptor." With those things in mind, I pose the following questions to the community:

1. Has anyone bought, spoken with, know/heard about, or had any other business dealings with these MisterKit people?

2. Does this whole situation really sound too good to be true and could I be walking right into some sorta scam?

3. If it is a scam, does anyone know of any other places where one can hunt for out of print/hard to find decal sheets?

Thanks all! Happy Modeling!

Excuse me; I hit the proverbial brick wall in April, so it's been about 2 months since.

Misterkit has been around long enough to have sent their paint line to the various websites for review a few years ago

link provided to show the date at the bottom  modelingmadness.com/.../mrkitcolor.htm

so, they didn't just pop up in recent times or something,,,,,,,,which is something that a fly by night scam site might do

another way to check would be to go to Flight decs site in Canada,,,,,if they also list the decal sheet, there is no reason to think that MisterKit doesn't really have it also

USFDon, I have in fact ordered from Misterkit under similar circumstances. Like you, one day out of simple  wishful thinking I did some searching for the OOP PE interior set for the Revell/Matchbox Heinkel He 115. Lo and behold Misterkit came up stating that they had it in stock. I opted to go ahead and give it a shot and ordered it up. I did get a bit nervous as I never received any notification that it had been shipped although my card had been charged. I stayed patient and the PE set did indeed arrive about 3 weeks later. I was just ecstatic as I had in my in my hands an item that I doubted I would ever find. In short I give Misterkit the OK. Just don't expect a quick delivery.

USFD,

I have ordered a number of times from Misterkit.  Mike is your contact there and is a great guy.  I know sometimes there can be delays from the overseas delivery, but Mike is always helpful.  BTW, their paint is very good.  Mike also sometimes has "buy-in" for different companies. (Roden, etc...)

Bob

PS - I first 'met" Mike through Aerodrome - he has been around a long time.

Thanks for the info, Joe! How did the He 115 build go for you? I'd be interested in seeing some pictures.

Also, just to make sure that we're all on the same page, I'm talking about this site:

www.misterkit.com/.../index.php

If we all are talking about the same thing, awesome! If not, any/all info is helpful.

yep, that is the guy,,,,,,,,,,the only acrylic paint manufacturer that doesn't include other "stuff" in his paint in order to try and get us to buy expensive house thinners,,,,,,,,you get his paints by selecting MisterKit in his manufacturer list in the drop down on the left of the site

since he doesn't put gunk additives in there,,,,,,we can really think it with distilled water for brushing, and airbrushing,,,,,,,,,,,,flow aid and retarders just make it better, but aren't mandatory

Hello, all.

Just a heads up: The decal sheet has arrived! Now I just need to make a bit of space in my stash for a P-40B model kit. Just need to figure out which one to get, though...

Happy Modeling!

Hey Don, I regret that it has taken so long to respond. No, I have not built this kit yet. It is simply one I would like to do in the future. But, I do gather up AM parts as I find them. I have both the Matchbox and Revell repop boxings. A new 1/72 or a 1/48 Heinkel He 115 is a kit I keep submitting every time there is a survey for kits that one would like to see made. I just consider the He 115 a sweet looking float plane.
