In Action series by Squadron

I am a collector or a hoarder, I think both apply.  Anyone else out there have more than 100 In Action booklets from Squadron publishing?  No brag, just fact...

Not yet, they won't put 'em on sale for $1.99 often enough. I do have the first F-4 Phantom in action, I got it over 30 years ago for Christmas. It's my favorite.

Yes, I have every one from the beginning.  It is kinda interesting that the original prices printed on the cover of the first few was $3.95, the newest ones now cost 18.95 retail.

Always loved the series. In the pre-internet days (when my collection started with the original "Luftwaffe In Action" set), they were one of the best single sources for clearly-delineated model-by-model changes for a lot of aircraft types. Plus, the color profiles section was "gold."

Always had to take their captioning with a grain of salt, though. Some was careless, some was just repeating mistakes made (and handed down) by others.

Still excited to see each new title. Not so much about the price, but that's the world today.

I have to concur with the price thing.  My first purchase was back before the first issue of "Finescale" hit the shelves (am I that old?).  I've paid less than .99 for some copies at "garage sales", and full list price for others.  I bought these on impulse many times, it keeps the hobby fire going.  I've found the best source is the Squadron mail order monthly flyer when I can get them at a very low cost if I just wait.  Sheesh, I paid full list for the three "ACES" series books, they are all on sale now for about 6 bucks each.  One last note, I am the proud owner of the S2F In action book.  I saw it advertised on E-bay for $100.00 (!) when I was looking for a copy, I "just said no".  Later, I bought it at a local hobby swap meet for $8.00 and felt like I was getting away with something.  Thanks for you comments folks!

I'm missing numbers 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 of the Armor In Action series, but have the rest (goes to 2051).

My aircraft collection is not as complete, but I have more than twice as many aircraft books as I do armor. I tend to buy the aircraft ones that interest me whereas I tend to buy every armor book that comes out.

I have a handful of warships in action and the combat troops in action.

Rob, you know your response has invoked my reaction to start organizing by numbers to see what I've got.  I'm heading down to the storage shelves now.....(after a bit)....revised totals:

only 95 genuine "In Action" booklets, 3 of which are duplicatesIndifferent

20 "Walk Arounds"

2 other publisher "imposters" cut and sized like the "In Action" series Hmm

And I thought I had a lot. So do you guys but them what ever the subject. I have only gone for ones that I have a number of kits of, mostly the German subjects. I have the grand total of 10 aircraft and 4 armour ones.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yes.  I never know when I will need research for a build, and having to wait for references to come in is time wasted that I can't afford.

Bish,  this has taken since late "79ish" to collect this many, I believe the C-130 being the first I purchased.  The subject is usually chosen after reading a historical account such as that written in the collected stories,"Fast Movers" ...."A Tough Evolution", by John Nichols, (thus the inspiration for F8Sader).  Pretty soon, here comes the kit for the collection, then the "In Action" series book, but not necessarily in that order.  Then its "Low Level Hell" by Hugh Mills and it's off to the kit purchase and document search again.  Then other times I see a sale deal online and get these for a dollar or so with 15% off on orders over 75.00 with free shipping through today at Squadron.

I've got an Excel spreadsheet for armor, aircraft and others. I print out the spreadsheet and use it as an index of my in action titles. I put the printed page in the front insert window of a large 3-ring binder.

Each 3-ring binders has heavy duty document protectors that I put each book inside. My armor books are in one binder, aircraft 1000-1059, aircraft 1060-1099, aircraft 1100-1149, aircraft 1150-1199 all in separate binders. Warships and troops are in a shared binder. Armor walk arounds and aircraft walk arounds are each in separate binders. Off brand armor books are in another binder.

Organization is the key to not buying duplicates.

I buy every armor title, but not at full price. I wait until Squadron has some sort of sale or if I see one on eBay for cheap. I first ran across the T-34 one at the Fort Knox Armor School book store and thought it was overpriced at $4.95 (in 1987). But as a new, single lieutenant, I had more money than I needed and bought it anyway. I had bought a 1/48 scale Bandai T-34/76 that had an interior and needed the book for reference.

I began my collection in earnest by buying them at the Stars and Stripes bookstore in Mannheim, Germany. Stars and Stripes carried them for a dollar off the cover price. Most of the ones I got from them still have a price tag over the pre-printed cover price.

Thanks for the comments Rob, being organized has never been one of my strong points...however, I do have a spot on my bookshelf for my collection.  I looked a little online, but I couldn't seem to find an index available for these publications.  It would be interesting to see what I'm missing.

All I have is the F-14 and Early MiG fighters in actionSad Of course there's about a hundred more I want. Oh well I'll build them up little by little.

Just remember, the aircraft ones go into the 1200s, but I stopped buying them a while back so my list ends in the late 1100s and is not a complete listing.
