Is Alclad II substantially different from the original Alclad?

I never used the original either.  But I sure love the stuff now.  If you get a good undercoat, and spray it thin and evenly, you'll get a beautiful finish. It cleans out of the airbrush very quickly. It has so many shades available you can get a really realistic finish.  It is already very thin- I have never had the airbrush clog nor spit with the stuff.

I never saw the original Alclad, but with Alclad II there's no need to thin it at all.

I purchased the Alclad finishing guide 20+ years ago. Has the paint changed when it became "Alclad II" - to the point this manual no longer applies? The old stuff you thinned with acetone ....Scott
