The Eduard sets are long OOP, but if you want to search for them, the bomb bay was 48144, the exterior was 48145 and the interior was 48146.

The doors on the Monogram kit are solid (left and right) whereas the actual plane's bomb bay doors folded in half as they opened so the Eduard bomb bay set was a necessity.

If you got lucky and found all three sets, you'd probably end up paying around $10 a piece delivered ($30).

The landing gear tires are made very thin to allow them to retract into the wings. Resin replacement tires would cost around $5.

New resin engine, propeller, maybe the turret machine gun and the project is pushing $45-50.

But it's your time, money and hobby to do with as you please.

Eduard put out two PE sets for the Monogram kit- one for the interior and one for the exterior. They are old and OOP nowadays. Or you could do it the old fashioned way and scratch any detail you care to add.

Built the AM model some years ago, I added some PE seatbelts but frankly the kit is so detailed I don't think it really needs any aftermarket parts. I might have to pick up an Italeri kit though since I bought this model at a show and the former owner had swiped the torpedo for something else and I could use the torpedo on this kit and the bombs on the Italeri one.

That's the point I was trying to make. The Accurate Miniatures Avenger is a great kit and on eBay, they are around $20-30. Big Ed sets are between $35-50+ depending on the subject.

In the end, you get a better kit for less money. I'd build the Revell kit OOB with folding wings, et al and leave it at that.

I doubt any of the am sets will work on the monogram kit. Why bother? The kit is an inaccurate mess of poorly fitting ill detailed parts. The money you would spend on am to fix up this old kit would be better spent just buying an Accurate Miniature or Italeri release.

Also, would anyone think that the Eduard "Big Ed" p.e/aftermarket set for the Hobby Boss kit work for my Revell?

@ Rob. Yes, it's the Monogram kit using the 1958 molds.

I have a stash of Monogram TBF's, all picked up on the secondary market.  One of them had a PE set with it.  I will check the manufacturer, to see who made it, and post back.  I don't think it was from the AM kit, it might have been an Eduard set.  Among other things, it included belts of .50 cal ammo and the YAGI antennas for under the wings.

That's the ancient Monogram Avenger with retractable landing gear, folding wings and dropping torpedo, right? Other than the type of the aircraft, I doubt aftermarket stuff made for the AM kit would work on the Revell kit.

The Accurate Miniatures Avenger kits have been out since the mid 1990s (I found messages discussing it dating to 1996 and pre-orders in 1995). With the AM kits being around so long with a decent retail price (listed between $15-20 in the old posts), I doubt much effort was given to create any aftermarket for the old Monogram kit. Whatever someone could make would cost as much as the better AM kit.

Italeri's Avenger is a rebox of the Accurate Miniatures kit, but Italeri included every armament option that AM offered in separate boxings (torpedoes, bombs) and added new decals.

Greetings all.

I recently acquired a 1:48 Revell TBF-1 Avenger Model. After looking over the kit, I noticed that there were a few aspects of this model that I would like to enhance with P.E. parts and/or some resin parts.

After doing a bit of sleuthing around on the internet, I found that P.E. parts for Revell kits are fairly limited in scope and that most other aftermarket kits are for the Accurate Miniatures or the Italeri releases of this particular bird.

My question is this: Has anyone tried to use P.E. parts for, say, an Accurate Miniatures bird on a Revell kit? If so, how did it work? If it didn't work, am I on a fool's errand for trying to mix 'n match?

Once again, thanks fellow modelers. Once I get building on it at some point in the future (It's currently #5 in my queue of models to build in my stash) I'll post up pictures and such

Happy Modeling!
