That's good to know.  I always enjoyed John Wayne in the movies. Perhaps, as you say, he was having a "bad day" but that was 60 years ago, so I'm not going to make any judgements, as I was not there, and my buddy who was in the film is long gone.  He was a combat hero in his own right. I sure do miss him, although I am 20 years younger than he.

Cadet Chuck

An old friend of mine, while in the Navy in WWII, appeared as an "extra" in "They Were Expendable."    He said he met John Wayne briefly but he was not very friendly.

I met John Wayne when he was filming "The Green Berets" at Eglin AFB back in the sixties. He was very friendly to us kids who got to go out to watch them filming and took a good amount of time to talk to us and ask us about how we felt about Vietnam at the time. Your buddy might have seen him on a bad day or maybe the Duke had mellowed in his old age when I encountered him.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

The film was shot in and around the Florida Keys and the Key Biscayne area in particular.

An old friend of mine, while in the Navy in WWII, appeared as an "extra" in "They Were Expendable."  He was one of the troops running down a pier to man the boats.  This part was filmed in Florida.  Unforturnately, he is not recognizable in the film, just one of the crowd.  He said he met John Wayne briefly but he was not very friendly.

I've seen "Battle of the Bulge" and enjoyed that one immensely!

I found a display of war movies @ Walhmart today when I went to get a new mouse. They were $4.00. I picked "In Harm'\s Way" and "Battle of the Bulge" I looked for "The Longest Day" but they didn't have it. They also have The Dirty Dozen and "They were expendable."
