Just sayin'.......
Posted by Viejo on Saturday, October 19, 2013 9:36 PM

When I'm in a build, accuracy of depiction is less important to me than is execution of construction.  That is to say I don't worry about how accurate the model is as much as I worry about how good it looks when it's done.  Invariably, they never look as good as they did in my head during construction, but I like 'em when they're done.

Now, I see there's been a couple of attempts at a SAC group build, has there ever been an 8th AF-Friend or Foe group build?

I vaguely recall an 8th AF GB on here a couple of years back.

I seem to recall a "Mighty 8th" build of some sort as well...

I ran the Mighty 8th GB a few years back. I had planned on a successor build for next year but have put it on hold due to the high number of current GB's. I am rather interested in the 8th, mainly those airfields and units in my native county of Norfolk.

Yes, having those bases around where you grow up does tend to color your interests.

Nope. Growing up here there was plenty of bases around. Only after the Cold War ended were many of them shut down and their occupants merged with those on other bases.

Same here. A lot were closed after WW2 and turned back to farm land. Out of the 37 in the county, there now 1 left as an airbase. And of all the former US bases, there's now 2 flying stations left.

But at least the 8th is well remembered. A lot of the old airfields, especially thise used by flying clubs and the like, have a museum of some sorts, often in old control towers.

I was thinking more of the opening of "Twelve O'Clock High"... the empty abandoned airfield coming to life in his memory. Great stuff.
