Fixed shop just in time
Posted by Don Stauffer on Sunday, January 5, 2014 11:00 AM

My shop was too cold this winter to work more than a few minutes at a time.  I covered the double window in my shop with plastic film, and dragged out an old quartz portable heater.  The combination of the two worked wonders and I can work indefinitely in there now.

Just in time. It is bitter cold today, and will be worse tomorrow and Tuesday. In fact, everything is closing tomorrow- wind chills will be 45 to 50 below in morning, high will be 16 below actual, 25 to 30 below wind chill.  Won't be going anywhere for a few days, shopping, meetings cancelled, so will get lots of shop cleanup and modeling done :-)

Stay warm. Coldest winter I've seen in a very long time. I fly a lot of trans cons and it's amazing how icy and snow covered it is across the entire Northern US, all the way over to the Sierras.

I hear ya Don.  I'm in eastern ND and we are supposed to have very similar weather.  Maybe a little more wind (as usual) and the air temp a few more degrees below zero.  The weather service is forecasting wind chills in the -60 range tonight through Monday night.

But, there's a warm-up ahead.  20's ABOVE zero next weekend! Paradise

It's supposed to get down to 20 here in Houston tomorrow. Then, whatever the wind throws at us.ParadiseBlack Eye

Pretty cold for here, though nothing impressive to you guys up there. Maybe the mosquitos won't be as bad this summer!

Ha-ha.  I don't think anything short of a nuclear winter would get rid of the mosquitoes!  And probably not even that.

In many ways, 20 above in Texas is more dangerous than 30 below up here.  We are used to being below freezing, you guys aren't.  It's supposed to be much colder than "normal" most everywhere in the USA for a while.  Everyone stay safe and warm!

Don,  that cold front is closing in on Louisville as I write.  From a high of 53F earlier this afternoon, we are expecting temps to be -5F by tomorrow morning and stay below  0F until Wednesday.  In my 11 years here, I've yet to see a daily high below zero.  Tuesday morning low is forecast to be -8 to -11F.  What the %^#$% is North Dakota weather doing in central KY????   Stay warm.

I'm a mail carrier in Connecticut.  It has been brutally cold since Christmas.  The weatherman is saying IRS going to be 50 tomorrow and 9 on Tuesday. This trip to Florida on Thursday is looking better and better.

Air temp when I went out to get the paper today was -27.  Windchill was -50.  This is not record cold but is the coldest I remember going out in since I moved to Minnesota in '83.

Don, that's just brutal cold temps. Down here in Tennessee we're possibly gonna get wind chill temps a little below zero. Not as bad as what you have up there but we're still not used to it down here. Stay warm.

Don, we must not be too far from each other.  That's pretty much identical to what I woke up to as well.

Did you get the freezing rain on Friday?  Here it was about 25 degrees with rain, so it froze as soon as it hit the road (or anything else).  And then it very quickly got too cold for salt to do any good.  So driving has been real fun.

Most schools and business in Louisville are closed today.  An interesting note on the website of the National Weather Service Louisville Office is that on Jan 5, 1884, the temperature failed to rise above 0F, and that has occurred only twice since weather records were maintained (over 130 years).  Today is the third.  We are no where near as cold as Don in Minnesota and even as close as Indianapolis, the high temp today is around -12F.  This is certainly unusual weather for central KY.  But the big incandescents over my modeling desk throw off alot of heat and that's where I'll be this afternoon.

I don't know about any of the businesses here in northeast Tennessee where I am although I'm sure the schools are closed because of the snow. We get an inch of snow here and they start closing the schools. And that may be what we got last night. Of course with the bitter cold temps it can make even a little snow more treacherous so closing the schools today would definitely be wise. I'd thought about getting out today but I don't really need to so I may just stay tucked away at my modeling desk as well.

A VERY large portion of the US is going to have high temps at or below freezing today.  A very sizable chunk will struggle to hit zero degrees.

Everybody stay warm and safe!  Just stay inside and do some modeling!

Had about 6 inches of the white stuff and ice on the ground from the weekend but it went UP over night to 40 degrees and we woke up this morning to see all the snow gone. Supposed to go down to 7 tonight and then back up to around 50 by the weekend then back down next week. Quite a roller coaster ride. No wonder a lot of people here in eastern Pa. are sick.

No, we've been dry except for a bit of snow yesterday.  Just as good, as I can do without freezing rain...

I think Schmidtly means Don Stauffer, who is in the Twin Cities. -28 below F here in Northern MN this morning. Ehhh, big deal. Drop the kids off at daycare (School cancelled) and go to work like usual. Looks like Global Warming faded away along with Al Gore?

Yeah, sorry pordoi...I didn't notice there were two Don's in the conversation.  I meant Don Stauffer.  And I guess he's farther from me than I thought.  Usually the Twin Cities are at least 5-10 degrees warmer than around here.

I hear ya Nathan...it's cold but hey, life goes on.  We are used to stretches of 20's below, but usually not so early or so often.  We had the 4th coldest December on record this year.  Brrrr...

And yes, during weather like this I always say I wish global warming would hurry up and start!

Oops!  Didn't make that connection.  Can see how you folk in Northern MN are accustomed to this kind of cold weather when we in KY don't understand what below zero really means.  But just wait until next July or August if you get a day or two of 104F with a dewpoint of 74F.  That's weather that we KY residents say "put another round of burgers on the grill..."   Big Smile

Ha-ha!  Yes Don (not Stauffer Wink), I was thinking along the same lines today.  Up here we wear our "cold-and-windy" badges with pride, while down there you get to wear you "hot-and-humid" badges!

It was 61F in Louisville yesterday afternoon and I was out in the garage doing some priming and painting.  This morning, I wake up and see that we're under a winter storm warning Surprise with heavy snow expected this afternoon.  This is crazy weather.
